Two injured, two presumed dead in Iowa munitions plant explosion
Two people were injured and two are presumed dead in a morning explosion at a southeast Iowa munitions plant.

The blast occurred at 10:25 a.m. on Line 1 at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, plant administrators said in a press release Monday.

Two employees of American Ordnance, a company with locations based in nearby Rock Island, Ill., which owns and operates IAAC, are missing and presumed dead following the blast. Two others received minor injuries.

Des Moines Register

There are two AP photos in the story. This just goes to remind people like me how powerful the stuff I work with really is.

(Mods: Feel free to move. I searched the last 3 days and didn't see this story in LBN. I just got the info in an email at work.)

3. Is this the plant that is the last plant manufacturing the bullets...
...for the M-16?

I heard recently that the U.S. only has ONE plant manufacturing the bullets our solders use, and they also are short on ammunition in the field. If this is that plant, this could be very bad.

Also, can anyone tell me what the M-4 rifle is? Is it a larger gun, or are they switching to the M-4?

8. At a supposed time of war...this * administration failed to
get other munition plants up and running or giving incentives for the company to expand to handle the need......pathetic.....

I am curious about safety at the plant...have safety codes been relaxed since the * cabal came into power?

My sympathies to the families....

15. The M4 carbine is a shorter, lighter version of the M16 rifle...
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 02:25 PM by benEzra
it has a shorter barrel and handguard and an adjustable-length shoulder stock. It's the same caliber as the M16 (5.56x45mm/.223 Remington) and takes the same magazines.

Those munitions are for the brown people!

On a more serious note, I'm very sorry for the casualties and their families.

11. Actually, it's about 40 times the size of Monaco
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 08:32 AM by Art_from_Ark
Monaco is only 0.75 square mile in area, while 19,300 acres is a little more than 30 square miles (640 acres= 1 square mile)

13. hope the damage was so bad they can't make bullets anymore

too bad the whole place didn't blow up.

(if you work at a place that makes bullets meant to kill people and animals - your choice, your injury or death)

14. I agree....
just think of what a wonderful country we could be and what a nice place this could be if we'd spend half as much time, money and energy on more important things. No, we're so damned stupid in this country that we can't see the big picture.
