US doctors begin Zarqawi autopsy (BBC)
US doctors begin Zarqawi autopsy

Two US doctors have begun an autopsy on the body of top militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, killed in a US-led operation in Iraq this week.

Questions have arisen over how Zarqawi died since the Americans revealed he had still been alive following the bombing of a safe house by US planes.

It is unclear if Zarqawi's remains will be released to his family in Jordan.

Iraq has seen more violence with five butchers shot dead in a shop in Mosul and three deaths in a Baghdad bombing.

18. LOL was wondering what the report on limbs would be like
How many? Any missing? Which one(s)?

Over the evolution of his story, especially in photos. hasn't there been cases where that leg issue has been problematic?

14. 8 Year old girl killed in blast - did they need to use a 500 pound bomb?
"A total of six people died when the house was destroyed by two 500-pound bombs on Wednesday. An Iraqi army officer said they included two women and an eight-year-old girl"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13237281

Was this the only way?

27. Not the only way, but the most effective
From what I know, a Delta Force recon team was the unit to have eyes-on Zarqawi. This unit would not have had sufficient firepower and numbers to be able to surround the building and assault it. Even if they did, the liklihood that the civilians would have been killed is high. And, of course, the liklihood of all of us to come on here and complain that they were killed in the cross fire. Its a sad and horrible fact, but there are casualties in war. All the more reason to finish it and get home sooner.

3. Not releasing the remains to the family looks rotten too.
But well, the US is minded to play this the absolute worst way possible no matter what...

5. General Caldwell: ""We are doing the autopsy to see how he actually died.
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 09:45 AM by IndianaGreen
"We are doing the autopsy to see how he actually died. It will be completed by this evening and will be made public maybe as early as Monday."

Two military experts were flown in to perform the procedure he said, adding that they would be sensitive to Muslim traditions about dealing with the body.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5067540.stm

If only the US had stuck to its original version of the story...

Perhaps Zarqawi wasn't even in the house that was bombed, but was near enough to the explosion to be mortally wounded by the concussion.

Then there is the explaining about the civilian casualties, particularly the women, which don't fit into the misogynist Al-Qaeda culture.

16. There is something fishy about it all
Once more, the "official story" keeps morphing, and shifting its details. It seems clear that there is more to this. Among other things, the trophy photo of his head seemed way too good for someone who had been meters away from the center of two 500 pound high explosive blasts.

The LA Times story quoted a U.S. spokesman saying "coalition forces had "cleaned up his face" for otherwise unaltered photos of his corpse". That could be a clever way of admitting that they photoshopped in the face of the notorious Zarqawi. Maybe they got him, but he was unrecognizable. Maybe its all just a scam, and they didn't get him at all.

7. Heard then sat last night on TV
that Z...was away from the house when the bombs hit. People had been questioning why he wasn't blown up in the explosion so they had to cover their tracks with yet another version of the story.

11. There's a thread--
it'll probably not drop of the first page--claiming that an anonymous Iraqi saw the US soldiers find a wounded guy near an irrigation ditch, dutifully wrap his head in an "Arab robe" (I think the phrase was) and beat him ... to death. An anonymous Iraqi male said it, so it must be true.

Posters dutifully replied, saying they knew right away that Zarqawi's face looked like it had been beaten by rifle butts and those weren't wounds from a bomb. Presumably they're experts on such things, I wouldn't know. The "that ain't Zarqawi crowd" wasn't in evidence on that thread.

But the implication of the anonymous truth-teller is that Zarqawi's death was the result of yet another American war crime, taking a poor, injured, peace-loving Muslim and beating him mercilessly about the heads and shoulders.

13. No, of course not. He was killed by a huge bomb.
Shouldn't it have blown him to little bits though?

That one killed people, but left buildings standing. The "anti-neutron bomb" blows buildings to pieces but leaves nice corpses.

21. I will confess to being facetious regarding this invention
I.e., I made it up.

But, in today's world there may well be research along this line. After all, a nice corpse would make war appear more noble and could well assist recruiting. 19th century war art usually had nice corpses. The invention of the camera put a stop to that.

19. Guy looks like he died of a heart attack, not 2- 500 lb bombs. No cranial
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 03:07 PM by VegasWolf
damage, no thorasic damage, rib cage fully intact, cranium fully intact. Head and arms fully attached to torso.

Two 500 lb bombs and the guy looks like he died in a hospital bed.

Suspicious to say the least.

22. Excuse me, but didn't we have a discussion about this the first time
around? When Saddam's sons died? Don't the Iraqis consider it offensive to take pictures of the dead and air them, even of those they hate? Didn't it come out then that Iraqis don't like autopsies either?
