LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Doors in the U.K. House of Commons are locked, after a man told police that a powder found in the chamber is anthrax, Sky News reported. Proceedings within the chamber are continuing while the powder is being probed, a member of parliament told the television channel.

The House of Commons has been "locked down" with no-one allowed in or out while police investigate an alleged incident.

It is understood the alert comes after someone was reported to have "thrown around" an unknown substance in the building's Central Lobby.

The person was reported to be "making claims" about the substance.

There is an anthrax alert at the House of Commons and Parliament's doors have been closed, Sky News has learned.

Political Correspondent Jon Craig said: "In the Central Lobby a powder was found. A man was detained and he told police it was anthrax."

Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident after eyewitnesses said they saw powder thrown in Parliament.
