Bush: Chavez doing 'disservice' to Venezuela

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- President Bush on Wednesday suggested that Venezuela's fiery anti-American President Hugo Chavez has done "a great disservice to the traditions and people" of his South American nation.

Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the United States, but relations between Chavez and the Bush administration have deteriorated sharply.

Chavez, an ally of Cuba's Fidel Castro, has called Bush an alcoholic, a terrorist and an imperialist.

He has denounced the U.S.-led war in Iraq and repeatedly accused the United States of trying to overthrow him to seize his country's vast oil reserves.

World Bank: Venezuela decreased poverty

http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/news.php?newsno=1979

Venezuela has achieved substantial improvements in the fight against poverty. The statistical evidence that we have compiled shows that from 1995 to 2005 the number of homes under the poverty line has decreased,” stated the World Bank.

The organization said that in these years the number of homes in poverty decreased from more than 40% to 30%

It described this advance as important and stated that it is related to Venezuelans’ higher income levels and as a result of the social missions.

There's more worth reading at the link. Now if only CNN would report it.

NO MORE CHEAP OIL SAYS CHAVEZ

By Meirion Jones

Producer, BBC Newsnight

Monday April 3, 2006

If you thought high oil prices were just a blip think again. In an exclusive interview with Greg Palast for BBC Newsnight the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has ruled out any return to the era of cheap oil.

The colourful Venezuelan leader hosts the OPEC meeting on June 1 in Caracas and he will ask OPEC to set $50 a barrel - the average price last year - as the long term level. During the 1990s the price of oil had hovered around the $20 mark falling as low as $10 a barrel in early 1999.

31. There were a lot of Cuban "exiles" in Venezuela then, too. One of them,
who had been in Venezuela, was bomber/mass murderer Orlando Bosch, who with Cuban "exile" Luis Posada Carriles, who was the head of the secret service in Caracas, masterminded the bombing of a Cubana airliner and killed all 73 people on board, including children, and medical students.

Jeb Bush initiated a campaign years later, when he was living in South Florida, to get his father to bypass an exclusionary decision by the acting Assistant U.S. Attorney General Whitley, and give Bosch an administration pardon, after over 30 other countries had refused to admit him.

Another Bush family friend is Venezuelan right-wing media tycoon, Cuban-Venezuelan Gustavo Cisneros, who was one of the coup-plotters.

50. Let's see, where do I begin?
Well, for starters he has employed nationalism, press intimidation, corporation intimidation, and labor union intimidation. He has stacked the courts, exercised "rule by decree" power, seized private property, dissolved the congress, and indicated that he seek to rule for 25 years.

Other than that, he has behaved like a good little fascist.

51. Rather than flinging charges, get some links.
As you already know, each one of these claims you've flung out has been addressed very successfully, time after time after time.

Especially odd is your "dissoved the Congress" claim. Haven't seen that one used before. Especially odd considering the coup plotters dissolved the National Asssembly, the Supreme Court, dismissed the Attoraney General, the head of the Central Bank, the Omsbudsman, and dissolved the National Electoral Board. Very fast work for a less than 48 hours in control. Oh, yeah. They also pitched the Venezuelan constitution.

37. World Bank: Venezuela decreased poverty
http://venezuelanalysis.com/news.php?newsno=1979

“Venezuela has achieved substantial improvements in the fight against poverty.

The Bank explained that there is still a long way to go because “the objective is to not have anyone below the poverty line and Venezuela is a petroleum country that is going through a time of high international oil prices and because of this should apply all these resources to poverty elimination.”

These statements were made during consultations which took place yesterday.…, which will be jointly developed with the Planning Ministry, will be a step towards the design of a new cooperation strategy between the Bank and the country.

.... meanwhile the poverty rate in the US is what again? It has risen how much under our dictator?

53. Bush backstabbing to undermine Venezuela's chances for the U.N. Security
Council isn't addressed directly when Michelle Bachelet visits the White House:

Bachelet refuses to budge in Washington
The Chilean president was impressive in defying US pressure to oppose Venezuela's security council bid.
Roger Burbach

President Michelle Bachelet came to Washington on Thursday for a one day whirl wind trip that included a meeting with George Bush. Both exchanged pleasantries after the meeting, neither referring to the heavy-handed efforts of the Bush administration to pressure Chile to oppose Venezuela's bid for a seat on the United Nations security council.

Just 11 days before the White House visit the Chilean daily La Tercera published a report on a meeting between Condoleezza Rice and the Chilean foreign minister, Alejandro Foxley, in which the US secretary of state insisted that Venezuela's candidacy for the UN seat "aims at the heart of US interests". Rice warned that "Chile could fall into a group of losers against US interests ..." and that the United States "will not understand" a Chilean vote for Venezuela.

The Bush administration is backing the candidacy of Guatemala in its campaign to stop President Hugo Chávez from winning a seat for Venezuela. Five of the 10 rotating seats on the security council are opening up in October, and one of them traditionally goes to a Latin American nation. Although the UN general assembly formally votes on the council members, the candidate is usually selected beforehand by a consensus among the countries of the region.

It is no surprise that the United States in its meddling in Latin American waters is backing Guatemala, a country with an atrocious human rights record. Under the current government of Oscar Berger, who took office in 2004, there have been charges of human rights abuses and he has done virtually nothing to bring to justice the perpetrators of a genocidal war against the country's Indian population in decades past.
(snip/...)

http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/roger_burbach/2006/06/burbach_on_bachelet.html

As you recall, he never did play fair!
