Alaska House Passes Oil Tax

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) -- The Alaska House on Tuesday voted to impose a 23.5 percent tax on the net profits of oil companies producing oil and gas in the state, but the Senate quickly rejected the proposal.

The House and Senate appointed a conference committee to come up with a compromise bill before the special session adjourns Thursday at midnight.

The House also passed 38-0 a bill giving the Alaska Supreme Court jurisdiction over any lawsuit that arises over the natural gas contract.

Both bills passed without debate.
