Agency kept quiet about Eichmann location during height of Cold War

WASHINGTON - Determined to win the Cold War, the CIA kept quiet about the whereabouts of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in the 1950s for fear he might expose undercover anticommunist efforts in West Germany, according to documents released Tuesday.

The 27,000 pages released by the National Archives are among the largest post-World War II declassifications by the CIA. They offer a window into the shadowy world of U.S. intelligence — and the efforts to use former Nazi war criminals as spies, sometimes to detrimental effect.

The war criminals “peddled hearsay and gossip, whether to escape retribution for past crimes, or for mercenary gain, or for political agendas not necessarily compatible with American national interests,” Robert Wolfe, an expert on German history and former archivist at the National Archives, said at a news briefing announcing the document release.

1. Documents Shed Light on C.I.A.'s Use of Ex-Nazis (NY Times)
Out of a sociopathic fear of Communism, the US government protected Nazi war criminals, just as they protected Japanese scientists that conducted human experiments on American POWs.

Documents Shed Light on C.I.A.'s Use of Ex-Nazis

By SCOTT SHANE
Published: June 6, 2006

WASHINGTON, June 6 — The Central Intelligence Agency took no action after learning the pseudonym and whereabouts of the fugitive Holocaust overseer Adolf Eichmann in 1958, according to C.I.A. documents that shed new light on the spy agency's use of former Nazis as informers after World War II.

The C.I.A. was told by West German intelligence that Eichmann was living in Argentina under the name "Clemens" — a slight variation on his actual alias, Klement — but kept the information from Israel because of German concerns about exposure of former Nazis in the Bonn government, according to Timothy Naftali, a historian who examined the documents. Two years later, Israeli agents abducted Eichmann in Argentina and took him to Israel, where he was tried and executed in 1962.

The Eichmann papers are among 27,000 newly declassified pages released by the C.I.A. to the National Archives under Congressional pressure to make public files about former officials of Hitler's regime later used as American agents. The material reinforces the view that most former Nazis gave American intelligence little of value and in some cases proved to be damaging double agents for the Soviet K.G.B., according to historians and members of the government panel that has worked to open the long-secret files.

Elizabeth Holtzman, a former congresswoman from New York and member of the panel, the Interagency Working Group on records concerning Nazi and Japanese war crimes, said at a press briefing at the National Archives today that the documents show the C.I.A "failed to lift a finger" to hunt Eichmann and "forced us to confront not only the moral harm but the practical harm" of relying on intelligence from ex-Nazis.

2. OMG! I can't believe this is reaching the light of day.
If they do any further investigations, all those ties among the so-called "conservative" groups and think tanks and the neocons with this fucker,...

,...yeah, like THAT will ever happen.

Nevermind.

11. Walt Disney was a Nazi?
Seriously?

This might explain a few things. I've never liked the man's movies.

In the earlier animated feature films, the women are either evil or helpless and waiting for a man.

In the recent family-like films--the men are complete jerks and the women smile and look pretty while their jerk significant other run roughshod over them.

Also, the children are usually smarter than all of the adults put together, and that gives me the creeps. Parentifying and adultifying children is one of the hallmarks of pedophiles.

You rarely hear anyone say a bad word about Walt Disney, and his films are like pop-culture icons. I've always felt like the "odd man out"--because most of his stuff seems like it originated from a very dysfunctional man.

7. I think it's coming out for 2 reasons:
1) People interested in real justice real America in the working democracy version (like us,) have been trying to pry evidence of BushCo malfeasance since before the 2000 elections (remember that missing service record of W's?) I mean, nobody with real sense believed Lil George's spin or that of his handlers or minions. W's cabal therefore threw up all of the classification walls. Since some of those walls have not kept us totally in the dark---a loose brick here and there, a court or two that won't "play ball"---some of the bad stuff is getting out.

That leads directly to:

2) These oldies are coming out as an airplane uses "chaff": as diversion and to buffer the impact of what will be a flurry of investigations and an avalanche of damning evidence (beginning any day now, I hope.) These big releases, now, of old "intelligence" and "covert" activities are given now to mitigate all of the current damning stuff...the "see, stuff like this has always gone on" tack.

10. Bingo...

... I am surprised, too, that his is getting covered. I have quite a few bookmarks that show how the Dulles brothers, among others, got Nazi war criminals out of Nuremburg trials and brought them to the US and gave them jobs in the GOP.

12. I think the CIA will be the downfall of BushCo...
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 06:51 AM by TwoSparkles
There have been quite a few BushCo uproars lately (NSA Spying, Dubai, secret prisons) and I sense that the CIA is leaking information.

BushCo publicly blamed the CIA for the war, suggesting that he was the victim of "bad intelligence." Can you imagine how decent CIA professionals feel when Junior blames them for the disaster he created? Many CIA agents most likely told him that there was no there, there.

I bet many of them are pissed.

I think this Nazi revelation is a warning shot. They're letting this administration know that they've got the goods on them--and this is just the first in a series of major revelations. If there are Nazi connections to the BFEE--you can damn well bet that this is is someone sending a signal to BushCo...

3. Since the US played Hitler for a while,
like Stalin did too by the way, that's no surprise. Capital, private or state-owned, has only one enemy: the proletariat. Any alliance can be, and has been, made to maintain this enemy where it should be: at work and consuming the goods it produces and the images that come with it.
