"Quiet sobbing" follows White House screening of "United 93"

WHITE HOUSE When the credits for "United 93" began to roll, the "sounds of quiet sobbing" could be heard in the White House family theater.

According to Press Secretary Tony Snow, the audience invited by President Bush included family members of those aboard the plane that went down on Nine-Eleven.

...

Snow called last night's screening "an extraordinarily moving event."

...

Snow says Bush spoke briefly to the families before the screening -- and consoled a number family members afterward.

I've read reviews that agree with you. The movie does NOT make Bush & his pals look good.

He never could keep his version of the story straight.

sneaking back in just before the movie was over. He can't sit in one place for a movie. I know a hyper active adult that doesn't go 2 movies because he can't sit still that long. He waits for the (now) DVD to be released, watches at home so he can move around, be on the computer, pause while he fixes a snack.

5. Is Bush crying because he took a month long vacation in Aug. 2001
It sends a message when the boss takes a ridiculously l-o-n-g vacation: Don't worry, everything is fine. So instead of acting on the increase in chatter to discover the 9-11 plot, Bush, by his actions, sent a message to everyone in the government: Everything is fine. Leave me alone. I'm goin' fishin'.

And of course, nothing in this story is first-hand; it's all filtered through Tony Snow, who will undoubtedly give us the real scoop of what happened when he writes his book and is endlessly flogging it on Fox when he gets out of government service.

19. it wasn't sobbing
It was that noise you make when you are trying not to laugh out loud at something inappropriate. Bushco was having a hard time keeping a straight face knowing that this was part of the "trifecta" that enabled them to dupe the American press and people into crowning him emperor and allowing his cronies to steal on a scale never before even imagined. His glee must have been palpable, even in the dark.

Although I do believe that Flight 93 must have been a very emotional film and that it must be hard to see your loved ones in that kind of situation and knowing what's going to happen to them...I'm not sure I would have gone to see it personally.

What I detest about the whole thing is how * and other Republicans have milked everything they can out of the 9/11 tragedy while doing as little as possible in terms of investigation or for the victims family

... Will you ask the president if he plans to see “The DaVinci Code?”

“No,” said Snow, adding, “You know what he would tell me? He’d say, ‘Snow, that’s a stupid question.’”

Moments later, Snow relented, saying, “If you want me to find out I will go ahead and make the inquiry if this is a searing issue.”

“I’ll ask him about Iran first…,” Snow added ...

UNITED 93 SCREENED AT WHITE HOUSE
Movie & Entertainment News provided by World Entertainment News Network (www.wenn.com)
2006-05-31 14:33:54

US President GEORGE W BUSH watched UNITED 93 at a special screening at The White House in Washington DC last night (30MAY06), alongside relatives of some of the tragedy's victims.

Bush and his wife LAURA were keen to see the first Hollywood film to be based on the September 11th (01) terrorist attacks.

The PAUL GREENGRASS movie, set on the hijacked plane which crashed in Pennsylvania, recalls how passengers counter-attacked terrorists on Flight 93, which was believed to be heading for The White House.

White House spokeswoman DANA PERINO says, "The president has always said that those who were on the flight, that the passengers and crew members of the flight were heroes."

25. Hey, when did this movie come out?!
And Bush had a screening for it just recently?! What does this say that "the decider" can't even get on the ball with a 9/11 movie?!

I understand he doubts there will be a screening of "An Inconvenient Truth," and I can understand why. It's a film about global warming, and given his contributions to the furthering of global warming, he's probably mad he didn't get producing credits.

27. Weird. George & Laura had a GOOD LAUGH the night of 9/11:
Ladies Home Journal:

Peggy Noonan (the interviewer): You were separated on September 11th. What was it like when you saw each other again?

Laura Bush: Well, we just hugged. I think there was a certain amount of security in being with each other than being apart.

George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, “you’ll be sleeping downstairs. Washington’s still a dangerous place.” And I said no, I can’t sleep down there, the bed didn’t look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we’re going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, “We’re under attack. We need you downstairs,” and so there we go. I’m in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I’m barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I’m holding Laura —

Laura Bush: I don’t have my contacts in , and I’m in my fuzzy house slippers —

George W. Bush: And this guy’s out of breath, and we’re heading straight down to the basement because there’s an incoming unidentified airplane, which is coming toward the White House. Then the guy says it’s a friendly airplane. And we hustle all the way back up stairs and go to bed.

Mrs. Bush: And we just lay there thinking about the way we must have looked.

Peggy Noonan (interviewer): So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers.

George W. Bush: That’s right — we got a laugh out of it.

These ghouls brought in bereaved family members to create pathos with a reminder of their pain. There's not one ounce of soul or empathy in this misAdministration for anything outside of their own self interest.

68. Nothing like feeding the delusions of our Messianic leader
I don't give a shit that people cried! I don't care anymore! Bush sees himself as Gawd's appointed one to lead America in a new Crusade that will outdo all previous crusades to free the Holy Land from infidels.

As far as I am concerned, we have butchered 100 innocent men, women, and children, for each innocent person that Al-Qaeda killed on 9-11. This blood lust must end, and end now, before we are consumed by the hatreds we have unleashed.

9-11 is just another version of the Reichstag fire, and just as the Nazis used that incident to assume dictatorial powers that would end at Auschwitz's gates, Bush has used 9-11 to destroy the Republic and proclaim himself the first Fuehrer in American history. G-d only knows what sort of holocaust will Bush lead this nation to.

The spectacle, the spectacle of the spectacle, the spectacle of the spectacle of the spectacle. Unless someone "quietly" sobbed at this piece of (scratch that) news.

84. 9-11 is the modern version of post-Civil War "waiving bloody shirt"
DUers will quickly notice the similarities between this Republican Party and the GOP of the Reconstruction period in exploiting a national trauma:

The war had a lasting impact on American politics and culture. For decades after the war, Northern Republicans "waved the bloody shirt," bringing up wartime casualties as an electoral tactic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War

In many cases the bloody shirt was quite literal, with the politician waving a bloody soldier's shirt to remind the crowd of the blood shed during the Civil War. This is the same thing that Bush and the GOP now doing with their shameless exploitation of 9-11. The problem for them is that the carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan have numbed us about 9-11, an event that many of us see as a failure of Bush's government and a pretext for imperialist aggression and expansion.

86. This is a misprint
According to my reliable sources, people were quietly muttering at Bush, "You stupid S.O.B." So the headline meant to say "quiet s.o.b-ing."

I bet saddam can watch a movie about the people he murdered, with the relatives present, and console them too.

So he's not doing something that unusual.. for a mass murderer.

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything. I'm going to start:
I want to give him kudos for not inviting his mother to the showing. Not having her there insulting the victims, was a step in the right direction.

Too bad his Katrina victims weren't as lucky.
