Pence (R) won't run with Fletcher (R) again
Also resigns as Justice secretary
By Ryan Alessi
HERALD-LEADER FRANKFORT BUREAU

FRANKFORT -- Lt. Gov. Steve Pence will announce today that he's not running for re-election with Gov. Ernie Fletcher next year and is resigning as the state's Justice Cabinet Secretary, Pence confirmed to the Herald-Leader last night.

<snip>

"I talked to the governor this evening and advised him I will not be a candidate for lieutenant governor in 2007," Pence said. "And I'm resigning as secretary of the cabinet effective Aug. 1."

<snip>
Hall said the governor was "understanding that a lot of people have reached their limit" with the yearlong investigation into administration hiring practices. Hall said Fletcher will have additional comments today.

<snip>
(my favorite line in the entire article)
When told of Pence's move to leave the 2007 ticket and the governor's Cabinet, Republican campaign strategist Ted Jackson said it was "devastating to Ernie Fletcher."

Earnie says that he intends to run for re-election next year in spite of the fact he's been indicted on charges of violating the states hiring laws.

Rats are deserting the ship :o

2. Can any Kentucky DUers say if Democrats have a strong contender to
run against Fletcher next time?

It would be terrific to grab the Kentucky governor's chair for the blue team.

4. Yes, we have several just waiting in the wings. One is
Rep Ben Chandler. Another is Crit Lu ellen. I'd like to see State Senator Ernesto Scorsone, or State Rep Mary Lou Marzian run for the office. Both would make fine governors.

5. Ah. It sounds like a good list. I'm not familiar with those people
except a bit for Ben Chandler, but not even much about him.

Thanks, alfredo.

6. We don't even know if Fletcher will make it beyond his
primary, but he does have the support of the Christian right and they are a very powerful voting block and will vote for anyone they are told to vote for.

8. Ole Ernie, when not thumbing his nose at the law,
was giving the Theocrats everything they wanted. They love him.

10. Kinda frightening. Reminds me of a guy in the White House, too.
Gore Vidal said of those theocrats, after he trashed them ideologically, that the other problem with them was "they breed like chiggers."

Needless to say, Gore Vidal doesn't get asked to do a lot of commencment addresses at conservative Christian schools.
