Rumsfeld Receives Scouting's Highest Commendation
Edited on Sat May-27-06 12:01 AM by ECH1969
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld received scouting's highest honor from the Boy Scouts of America here today.

The Silver Buffalo Award, created in 1925, is bestowed upon those who give "truly noteworthy and extraordinary" service to America's youth. Notable recipients include Charles A. Lindbergh, Norman Rockwell, Gen. Colin Powell, Walt Disney, Hank Aaron, Bob Hope, Vince Lombardi, Neil Armstrong, Charles M. Schulz and 14 U.S. presidents.

He said tens of thousands of Scouts have gone on to join the military. "By putting on our county's uniform, they are living up to the highest ideals of the Scout oath".

14. and how many of these 'tens of thousands' of scouts
are now dead, or damaged beyond repair, for some policy/ies nobody in a sane/religious/conscientious world would ever recognize as valid

When I was in scouting, at least we had solid adult supervision that I could look up to.

5. He deserves the award.
After all, its for "truly noteworthy and extraordinary" service to America's youth. What's more noteworthy and extraordinary than sending so many of them to their deaths?

24. ".. Be prepared to hold your liquor pretty well.
Don't write naughty words on walls if you can't spell.
Be prepared! To hide that pack of cigarettes.
Don't make book if you cannot cover bets.
Keep those reefers hidden where you're sure that they will not be found.
And be careful not to smoke them when the scoutmaster's around,
For he only will insist that they be shared. Be prepared! .." - Tom Lehrer

13. That's just sick.
The only thing Rummy has done for America's youth is get them killed in an illegal war or involve them in war crimes. The bastard ought to be rotting in jail, not accepting do-gooder awards.

'cuz i'd burn it again today on hearing this. I'm totally disgusted
at how the BSA has been converted to the hitler youth early program
for militarization of the youth. Lord Baden Powell would be shocked.

19. The number one rule for being a good scout is being (wait for it)
TRUSTWORTHY

A Scout tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct. People can depend on him.

As a former Boy Scout, I can't imagine a person LESS worthy of this award.

26. F!ck the Boy Scouts...and I'm not even a priest.
They ban atheists and gays, which is more than a little ironic. One of the Scouts' obsessions is allegedly about being "truthful". But if you're truthful about yourself, they'll boot you right out. Full disclosure: I''m an atheist, so the discrimination against my kind really pisses me off.

I'm also sick of their hypocrisy. They claim to be a "public" organization when they want free use of public-owned property or contributions. But when they get sued for kicking out the undesirables, they immediately holler that they are a "private" club.

(Repeat rant, sorry if you've heard it before)

A few years ago, I was out shopping one March morning in Los Angeles. Rain was pouring down and it was cold with strong winds.

As I came out of the grocery store, a couple of Girl Scouts and one of their Moms were selling cookies. Hardly anybody was stopping. That morning, you just wanted to get to your car and get out of that weather.

I stopped to buy a few boxes of cookies and asked the woman with the Girl Scouts why they didn't get involved in stupid battles over atheists and gays, like the Boy Scouts.

She said something like: "Because we do this to help our kids. Not to score cheap political points with the Republicans."

I don't doubt it a bit. So if the B.S. need money they can call Falwell or Robertson. However, I will always be generous with the Girl Scouts. Maybe they will grow up to marry the Boy Scouts and straighten them out. Or even better, kick their right-wing asses until they reform.

37. From the "How fucked up is that" desk at the news bureau
Let's see: A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Of those, I cannot give him loyal, because he is loyal to bush* but not the Constitution. He's not obedient to anybody because he runs the government. Cannot give him clean after ordering rapes & sodomy. As for reverent, he would only be that to one fucked-up God. What about brave? Well, Rummy wasn't brave enough to face up to the wretched world of deceipt he created. 0 for 12, Rummy.
