Man Reported Missing From Caribbean Cruise Fell Overboard, Videotape Shows

By JENNIFER KAY

MIAMI May 17, 2006 (AP)— A passenger reported missing on a cruise to the Bahamas fell overboard after a night of heavy drinking with friends, authorities said Wednesday as Coast Guard crews suspended their search for the man.

Friends of Daniel DiPiero, 21, of Canfield, Ohio, last saw him on the Mariner of the Seas around midnight Sunday, Petty Officer Dana Warr said.

About two hours later, shipboard security cameras show DiPiero falling overboard from a rail near the front of the ship, investigators said.

He was reported missing Monday morning when his friends realized he had not slept in the cabin they shared. Royal Caribbean International notified the Coast Guard after searching the ship and Coco Cay, an island owned by the cruise line...

1. What a dumb-ass name for a boat.
"Mariner of the Seas"

They thought they needed to distinguish it from the "Mariner of the Deserts" maybe?

Sorry, off-topic rant.

Carry on.

4. All of RC's Ships are *******of the Seas
We sailed on the Sovereign of The Seas in their fleet a few years ago. They also have Splendor of The Seas, etc. It's just their schtick...

5. Those make sense..."Mariner" is just goofy.
"of the Seas" is a descriptive term when talking about sovereigns or splendors. Mariners, by nature, already are "of the seas".

As I said, it's just a minor rant...

Really? How about the "desert schooners"? Were they driven by "desert mariners"?

33. "Desert schooners" was a slang term. We're talking about an actual boat
name.

What else would a "mariner" be of than "the seas"?

As somebody else posted, it's like "Aviator of the Skies"...

9. Not easy, but I almost pulled it off.
Alcohol was involved. And that stopover in Montego Bay didn't help either, if you know what I mean. The compulsion to get that perfect night shot of Montserrrat with the video camera prompted me to stand on the railing. I slipped, caught myself, caught my camera, thanked my good fortune, and wandered off to knock off the rest of the ship's store of Red Stripe.

I've never even looked at the tape to see if I got that shot. Hell yes, it was stupid, and I'm glad I didn't get what I deserved!

8. It isn't that easy, but several people do this
very thing every year. Maybe the cruise ship industry needs to address the issue of drunk passengers. They make a ton of money off of serving alcohol, but they do have a responsibility to keep people safe. Maybe having people patrol the deck at night or having someone at the doors that open onto the deck would help prevent some of these tragedies. (They also need to own up to the occurance of crime on cruise ships). Of course this doesn't do a thing for those with cabins on the veranda decks. In fact, when cruise ships began building cabins with verandas there was a lot of debate within the industry if this was too tempting for those contemplating suicide or homicide.

14. A ship is an intrinsically a dangerous place.
If you can't take responsibility for yourself, stay home. There's a point at which safety becomes idiot-proofing.

36. Yeah but if you fall off the deck of your house
chances of drowning or getting eaten by sharks are pretty slim plus there is a much higher likelihood that your body will be found.

32. Stupid hurts.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry to hear about it, BUT if you get that drunk you are inviting problems of some kind. It is the ultimate of personal responsibility.

Had he been on dry land he might have been hit by a bus or tripped and fallen and then died from a brain bleed...

Accidents happen, and getting drunk as a lord just elevates the chances of them happening. Getting drunk as a lord and then wandering off onto the decks of a cruise ship really is just not a good idea--just like it is a bad idea to hike alone in a remote area without telling anybody where you are going, or like voluntarily going swimming in a tank of hungry sharks.

It really IS an illustration of Darwin's theory.

15. Hell, it bothers me that there are security cams all over the place.
As far as product naming, how about:

Scourge of the Seas

Sailer of the Seas (a la "Decider")

Steamer of the Seas

Mall of the Seas

Tavern of the Seas

Mountain of the Seas

Cheese of the Seas (it doesn't make any sense. I just wanted to say cheese. And it rhymes.)

I know, I know, I missed my calling.

16. I may be off base here, but...
What good are security cameras if nobody is monitoring what's going on in the public areas of the cruise ship? In stores you get watched to see if you're shoplifting a DVD or something. I'd figure ship security would be watching shit happening on deck just in case some dumb-ass get's liqoured-up and falls overboard. Hell, they were probably watching what was going on in cabin 3-C.

25. Those ships are huge .... They are as big as a city ...
Edited on Fri May-19-06 07:01 AM by Veronica.Franco
Most of the crew is off at night and they sleep in the very bottom of the ship ... Unfortunately, this isn't uncommon ... If he was drunk way out on the bow late at night there's nobody out there but an occasional jogger ... which, sadly, may have been what the guy wanted ... He wouldn't be the first to solve his problems that way ...
