Iraq 'not as bad as under Saddam'

Iraq is not in a worse state than it was under Saddam Hussein, new Defence Secretary Des Browne has insisted.

As he visited British troops in Basra, Mr Browne said he did not have a rose-tinted view of Iraq and some areas were suffering unacceptable violence.

But Iraqis saw there were prospects for peace and security, he argued.

Mr Browne said the new Iraqi government needed "to quickly show people that politics works" by meeting their concerns on key issues.

2. So, let me see if I understand this....
...under Saddam, the Iraqis had electricity, running water, and other support services. The Iraqis could also walk the streets anywhere in the country without fear of being killed as soon as they set foot outside their homes.

Under NeoCon rule, very few Iraqis currently have running water and electricity. Killings throughout the country appear to be escalating. The country is almost totally destroyed.

But, Iraq is better off now?? What's Browne smoking?

10. Bush has even failed to install a noticeably less brutal regime
This is perhaps the worst aspect of the whole appalling affair. The US-constructed Potemkin government oversees a regime of unconscionable brutality. Every single night in Iraq, several people are snatched, tortured with drills, and executed. The Interior Ministry and local police forces are implicated. Patrick Cockburn in Arbil reports that in "relatively peaceful" Basra, a person is murdered each hour.

Is life better now than under Saddam? Life is certainly not less brutal. So even by this very low bar, Bush's illegal war has been an unmitigated failure.

7. What sets of criteria is he using?
Probably a Colbertian "gut" feeling. According to most criteria involving facts, the Iraqis are considerably worse off than they were under Saddam.

So, everything he says about Hussein is pure conjecture.
