7 House members arrested at Sudan embassy
FREDERIC J. FROMMER
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Seven members of the Congressional Black Caucus were arrested
at the Embassy of Sudan Tuesday, after protesting over atrocities in the Darfur
region of the wartorn nation.

"We will not tolerate genocide," said Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C., the caucus chairman.
"...We are saying to Sudan this has got to stop."

The seven members were hauled off in Secret Service cars after receiving three
warnings that they were violating the law by blocking the entrance to an embassy.
They faced $50 fines and were expected to be released after booking.

"Not on our watch," said Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., "Not on our watch will we allow
another genocide to take place." She wore a green T-shirt that read, "End the Darfur
Genocide."

16. Actually these Black Caucus members have been some of the
most outspoken members of Congress against the *ss and his policies. I think they can do two things at once. I am proud of them.

14. One of the unfortunate consequences of the Iraq war
is that we no longer have much standing, moral authority, or resources to do very much about Da fur. This does not mean that I believe that we should do nothing, but it does mean that I perceive the policies of the Bush administration have made it much more difficult to try to do something.

Perhaps to the point that the best we can do is to support the UN and such other organizations and countries that are able to take the lead on this matter.

East Bay's Lee, other lawmakers arrested during D.C. rally

Jim Doyle, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, May 16, 2006

(05-16) 12:23 PDT WASHINGTON -- Rep. Barbara Lee of Oakland was among seven members of Congress who were arrested today when they blocked the front entrance at the Embassy of Sudan in Washington, D.C.

Today's protest and civil disobedience was designed to embarrass the Sudan's military dictatorship for its ongoing genocide in the troubled Darfur region and to build public support for a United Nations peacekeeping mission there.

"The world stood by when nearly one million people died in Rwanda," Lee, a Democrat, said before her arrest by Secret Service agents. "The most that our country unfortunately did was say 'I am sorry,' after the fact. Now, over 400,000 people have died as a result of the genocidal actions of the Khartoum government against the people of Darfur ... Not on our watch will we allow another genocide to take place."

It was the second recent protest and civil disobedience at the Sudanese Embassy involving the arrest of members of Congress. Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, was among five members of Congress arrested April 28 outside the embassy.
