3. The attacks raised to at least 2,448
At least six civilians were killed and four wounded in the crossfire, said police 1st Lt. Maithem Abdel-Razaq.

One U.S. soldier died when a roadside bomb exploded near Rasheed airfield, a former Iraqi air force installation in southern Baghdad, damaging a Humvee and also wounding an Iraqi civilian, said police Lt. Mohammed Hanoun. The soldier was on a foot patrol near the convoy at the time, the U.S. command said.

Two other soldiers from 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, were killed Monday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb near Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad.

The attacks raised to at least 2,448 the number of members of the U.S. military who have died since the start of the war in 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

At 6:10 a.m., a roadside bomb exploded in central Baghdad's Karradah shopping district, destroying the liquor store and damaging two nearby shops. None of the stores in the area had opened yet, and the blast caused no casualties, police said.

4. A liquor store? I'm surprised that one existed.
Edited on Tue May-16-06 10:03 AM by 0007
Another bomb destroyed a liquor store in Baghdad in what appeared to be the third attack on the shop by militants determined to impose Islamic customs by closing down such establishments. The blast, one of three heard just past dawn, shook much of central Baghdad.

5. Add some more to the pile

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

7. The Liquor Stores In The ME Are State Controlled
Frequented solely by ex pats and the amount you can purchase is based on ones income. The higher the income the more you can buy. But they set limits and you can not buy more than your limit. During Ramadan they close for the entire month. Everybody stockpiles as much as they can the month before. Resorting to the cheap stuff as a way to stretch the booze. Each and every purchase is recorded in a book that resembles a passport. In Saudi Arabia they don't have ANY liquor stores but the high end hotels serve hooch.

Hope that helps!

13. U.S. casualties in Iraq surpassed those in Spanish-American war yesterday.
and continue apace today. The two figures cannot be compared apples to apples, of course. But the symbolic threshold is breached; Iraq just moved up the ladder in deadliest U.S. wars, as judged by absolute count of soldier deaths.

Within a month, the 2,500 figure will be passed.

19. We simply have to increase the ferocity of our protests.
I felt my copious letter writing and occaisional corner-standing protests were adequate.Bullshit.I am ashamed that I have not been more active. No more.I can't bear to watch more young lives be ruined, more soldiers to be flushed down the memory hole..People who have been active in years past...what is the key to successful protests? How do you get your point across to the masses?is this war different from Viet Nam because there is no draft?I feel impotent,in a way.any guidance from those who have been there would be appreciated..
