Bird habitats to get $3.9 million in grants
ELK GROVE – A top Interior Department official announced $3.9 million in federal grants yesterday to restore wetlands and habitat for migratory birds in California and elsewhere. Acting Interior Department Secretary Lynn Scarlett made the announcement at Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Elk Grove, to mark International Migratory Bird Day.
“The grants will go internationally for birds that transcend continents,” Scarlett said. Federal funds were given to 43 conservation partnerships in 34 U.S. states and 17 Latin American and Caribbean countries.
In California, Point Reyes Bird Observatory received $171,000 for research and restoration of riparian areas along Stinson Beach and $35,000 went to the Ventura Wildlife Society of Salinas for monitoring bird populations along the Central Coast.
