GM to End Production of Hummer H1!. (It's about damn time)
By DAVID RUNK, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 32 minutes ago

DETROIT - The 2006 model year will be the last for the Hummer H1, the hulking, gas-guzzling status symbol that has attracted celebrities and off-road enthusiasts but has drawn the ire of environmentalists.

General Motors Corp. announced plans Friday for the H1, which is the foundation for the automaker's Hummer brand. Based on the military's Humvee, the about 12,000 put on the road since 1992 defined the Hummer name.

"It's a reflection of where we're going with the Hummer brand," Hummer general manager Martin Walsh said of the decision. "The Hummer DNA still resides in the Humvee. ... It will always be the core from where we come."

GM expects the last H1s to be built next month.

Walsh said Hummer plans to focus on models with broader appeal instead of the niche-market H1. Since taking over the Hummer name in 2000, GM has introduced the still hefty H2 and a midsize H3 sport utility vehicle.

The H1 gets about 10 miles per gallon, but Walsh said rising gas prices didn't factor into GM's decision. He noted that H1 buyers typically have been less sensitive about gas prices than most other drivers.

1. They're even too big for much of what the military wants.
A retired marine corps colonel told me, "sometimes all you want or need is a small jeep."

2. I've only ever seen 1 of those on the road
I see H2s quite a bit. And assloads of Suburbans, Yukons and other army tank wanna-bes.

3. I've seen way too many of them to suit me
They are just so friken MASSIVE. They take up two spots at least in regular parking lots.

Maybe they'll get a clue, and replace it with a vehicle styled along the lines of the one driven by SNL's Ambiguously Gay Duo...! A two seater, with little drag, no doubt good on gas, could be converted to a hybrid...and would drive the fundies mad!

6. Don't See As Many as I Used To
The one that used to be parked a couple of miles up the road from me is gone.
Last time I saw something parked in that spot, it was a Prius!

7. You sure you're not thinking of the H2?
H2s are everywhere whereas the H1 is pretty rare (fortunately)

5. Those stupid things are all over the roads down here in Georgia.
Those things are so lame.

The Comedy Central show Reno 911 did almost an entire show on when they got one, very funny stuff.

12. I live in the DC area and for awhile, I noticed the H-1's, just saw one
about a week ago, I guess the schmuck can no longer afford the gas.

There ARE MANY Yukons, Escalades, Expeditions, Excursions, Suburbans, and the new Nissan.

These people are just STOOPID driving that crap

10. I saw this big fat bastard driving one of those today
and called him a gas hog as he passed. He blanched and then blabbered something I couldn't understand.
Those machines infuriate me. Sometimes I think those driving them are vicariously fighting the "Iraqi terrorists".

11. This news really cheers me up!
Now we need some real reforms in the car industry right across the board.....There has got to be a better way to solve our transportation problems but I guess we'll just have to wait till the gas goes sky high and miraculously everyone will get real creative real fast.
