BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Only President Bush will decide whether the United States will drop its illegal tariffs on steel, Treasury Secretary John Snow said Tuesday amid suggestions the White House wants a compromise.
On the eve of Bush's trip to Britain starting Tuesday, Britain has demanded the United States remove its tariffs on steel imports or face a trade war by next month.
The European Union is ready to hit back with duties on $2 billion worth of U.S. exports.
"It's an issue the president is considering," Snow told business leaders at the Confederation of British Industry's annual conference in the central English city of Birmingham.
