Chicago Gang Graffiti In Iraq
CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio 780) -- Street gangs born in Chicago are making their presence known 6,000 miles away.

The Sun-Times reports Chicago gang graffiti is showing up in Iraq, the handiwork of gang members now in the military.

Army Reservist Jeffrey Stolesonhas taken hundreds of pictures of gang graffiti in Iraq.

A Defense Department official says he's identified 320 soldiers as gang members and he thinks that's just the tip of the iceberg.

1. Folks Up!
I'd like to see pictures-Detroit and Chicago gangs and their graffiti are similar. As someone who drives around Detroit a lot as a social worker, I find graffiti interesting and am always looking to decipher it. I have yet to learn the orgin of the Oral of X logo (I'm not so sure I really want to know what that means) but the turtle logos around Highland park are the work of a local "artist". I'm guessing his name is Terrell or something close, as he spells turtle "Tertell".

In Detroit, there used to be two "families" of gangs-Folks and People. The Folks had a trident with the forks sticking up as their symbol, the People had the trident facing down. Thus, Folks-up, people-down. I haven't worked in delinquency in over 10 years, so I'm not as up on it all as I used to be.

Within the families, the gangs were then divided into Latin Counts, Cobras, Cash Flow Posse (and their wonderfully named girl group, the Flo Hos), etc.

2. Gang members are the iceberg. The military has been
recruiting gang members for at least 15 years cause they get the hierarchy and structure. My nephew is an officer and got cross ways with a gang leader and the result was that for a two year period he had body guards with him at all times and two guards stationed at his home to protect his family.
