NEW YORK, April 27 (Reuters) - An oil tanker carrying 309,000 barrels of heavy fuel oil from Cartegena, Colombia, to Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, ran aground south of Tallaboa, Puerto Rico, Wednesday night, the United States Coast Guard said.
Fuel oil is a low-quality residual oil product obtained from refined crude oil which is typically used as fuel for ships and power stations. None of the cargo leaked from the double-hulled vessel Margara, according to Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad.
Shipping sources said the vessel was under charter to Netherlands-based commodities trading firm Vitol.
There were no reports of injuries to any of the 28 crew members aboard the Cayman Islands-flagged vessel, which belongs to Margara Shipping Ltd. and is operated by Ernst Jacob, according to the Coast Guard.
