Danube dike bursts, 1000 flee
A THOUSAND people were fleeing and at least another 9000 were on stand-by for evacuation in Romania after the swollen River Danube burst its banks.

A gap about 100m long had opened up after emergency crews tried to plug the barrier about 4km from the town of Bistret in Dolj county.

"The water has already reached the edges of the municipality and the national road," said Bistret Mayor Constantin Raicea.

Tents have been put up for flood victims and 1000 people will have to be evacuated, although cattle have already been taken to safety.

At least 9000 other people living between Bistret and the town of Masesu de Jos are expected to be evacuated in the coming days, the head of Dolj's emergency services, Colonel Liviu Raducan, said.

much smaller scale, of course, but it's good to see that not all governments are as irresponsible as ours.

2. Th Romanina government Mayor Constantin Raicea are doing a good job
it would seem. They are certainly doing an exponentially better job that DimSon could ever do.

It's good to know they rescued the cattle as well as teh people. Much of Romania is rural in nature and people depend on their livestock.

vote count. They recounted, and the real winner took office. In Romania! Go figure! (also, in Ukraine, Italy)
His voters didn't have to feel like losers, then be urged to vote for the guy in the next election...
