New Orleans election: An experiment in democracy
http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/wwl041906jbelections.4f7935d5.html

-snip-

On Saturday, New Orleans will hold its first municipal election since Hurricane Katrina, using fax machines and other stopgap measures to pull off one of the trickiest exercises in democracy in modern times.

"We're going to write a whole new chapter for political science books that historians and lawyers can study for years to come," said Linda Walker, president of the League of Women Voters of New Orleans.

-snip-

State and city officials have agonized over election logistics for months and have been challenged every step of the way by civil rights groups afraid that thousands of black voters scattered around the country by Katrina will lose the opportunity to vote.

1. Oh, boy!
I can see massive opportunities for fraud in this. And not by the Rethugs, either. I certainly hope this election is squeaky clean, because if not, there will be massive repercussions when we try to discuss stolen elections. Here's hoping.

3. WWL put back its annoying registration feature
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 02:06 PM by KamaAina
it had been off for quite a while after the storm.

Fortunately, this is an AP story, also (freely) available here:

May the best man win! (i.e. obviously not Wilson, and not fellow righties Couhig or Forman, either)

edit: removed extraneous garbage from link

Norman Robinson is their anchor, and is the person who was outstanding moderating the recently nationally aired mayoral debates..... (along with tweety)

5. Its going to be interesting
to see how this race unravels. Mitch Landrieu is currently ahead in the polls. Whoever is elected needs to be a really strong leader and get New Orleans running again. The future of the city is basically resting on this race. I hope New Orleans will be a great place that draws tons of tourist from all over the world again. There is so much culture there, i hope the next mayor can restore it. I also attached another story about the race.
