GOP Spanish Language Ads Blame Dems for Bill to make aliens into felons
Here's an excerpt from an AP article distributed this morning. Have they no shame? The GOP members in the House pass a bill making it a felony to be an undocumented resident in the US and then try to blame the Dems for their action.

"... Republicans disclosed a Spanish-language radio advertising campaign designed to shoulder Democrats with the responsibility for legislation passed by the GOP-controlled House that would make illegal immigrants subject to felony charges.

The ads are scheduled to air in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada — states with large Latino populations. ... In the House, Republicans drafted legislation to make illegal immigrants subject to felony charges. Democrats say they were denied a chance to eliminate criminal penalties from the bill.

At another point, Republicans tried to substitute misdemeanor charges for felonies in the bill. Democrats opposed that effort, with at least some of them saying they wanted no criminal penalties at all. Republicans then passed the overall bill — including felony charges — on a largely party-line vote."

46. So let's ...
counter-attack and get the truth out there--It's the Repugs who want criminalize immigrants--remind them of Gov. Pete Wilson of Calif. and Prop. 187 and how all Repugs backed that initiative. Especially here in CA--we've never forgotten and Ol' Petey is sooo despised by Latinos!

90. So, does that mean the Dem's have to sponsor an add campaign
saying simply: "every thing they say is a lie."

I suppose telling the truth won't work. The truth is that the Dem's are not in control of the government branches at all, so any Hostility you feel is directed at you by a Republican government.

54. The problem is that they are politicians.
They only lie when their lips move. AFAIAC, neither side is doing well in this debate. They are too concerned trying to make political points to do the right thing for the nation. We need rational policies that make sense. But since this is an election year, each side is only positioning for gains at the polls. We are SUPPOSED to be better than this. ARGH, I hate even numbered years. Almost nothing worthwhile is ever accomplished for our nation during the election cycles.

96. No, the problem is that the Republicans perpetrated this campaign of LIES
...not the Democrats. The Republicans have proposed legislation making undocumented immigrants felons and deporting them, not the Democrats. Yet the Republicans produce lying ads to say the DEMOCRATS did this!?!?! What in that scenario says "both sides are guilty"?

Every time liberals back off and try to get along, the repukes drop another bomb. It's clear they have no interest in any compromise or bipartisanship, they only want us around to be abused. Probably because they would have absolutely no platform whatsoever if it wasn't for opposition to liberal ideas.

Yes, I know some very, very good people who are Republicans. People who I would trust with my child's life. And yet I have no desire to play nice with the bigots, zealots, hate-mongers, religious nutbags, baby-beaters, proto-fascists, liars and hypocrites that are the active wing of the GOP. I just want an island somewhere and the thugs can go fuck themselves.

6. The bending end!
Bush described the Senate legislation as a "promising bipartisan compromise on comprehensive immigration reform," and said Reid "refused to allow senators to move forward and vote for amendments…. It was a procedural gimmick that meant he was single-handedly thwarting the will of the American people and impeding bipartisan efforts to secure this border and make this immigration system of ours more humane and rational."

Reid responded within minutes.

:redbox:"If the president is serious about moving forward, then he should join me in calling on Sen. Frist to bring immigration reform back to the Senate floor when we return" from a two-week recess.

:redbox:"Hopefully, by then, President Bush and his majority leader will have found the backbone to stop the extreme elements of the Republican Party from blocking improvements to America's security," Reid said.

Bush and Reid swapped charges as Republicans disclosed a Spanish-language radio advertising campaign designed to shoulder Democrats with the responsibility for legislation passed by the GOP-controlled House that would make illegal immigrants subject to felony charges.

The ads are scheduled to air in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada — states with large Latino populations.

76. this would not be protecting, this would be the 50 stater
Think about how many hundreds of thousands showed up to protest this. Then think about what would happen in a state like AZ or NV if all of those people registered to vote, and registered to vote against the party that put this legislation forward. Those states would be solidly blue for a long time. CA would probably dump every republican member of the house from the San Joaquin Valley and So Cal areas for a long time. The sleeping giant that this woke up carried the potential to give the Dems the house and almost the senate in the border states alone.

I believe they are trying to play on the ignorance of the masses with this. They are trying to split the vote of those hundreds of thousands with a lie. If they can do that, it will not change voter registration percentages in the different parties. It will only add to the number of registered voters. If the repugs don't shift the blame on this they will make it a 43 state strategy because 7 states will not put repug in office. Your right, we can not let them shift the blame.

15. Surely the ads won't air, will they?
After all, when the Democrats and other progressives have wanted to run issue-oriented ads in various states, outlets like Clear Channel and Fox were absolutely scrupulous about vetting the ads for the "truth," and would refuse to run ads that even sailed close to edge. If there was a lame positive excuse that could be proffered for some corrupt Republican, that was enough to prevent the airing of any ad that painted corrupt Republicans as corrupt.

So surely such a bald-faced lie, even in Spanish, will be stopped by our faultless guardians of the airwaves. Right?

Anyone?

Bush, Democratic Leader Swap Blame on Immigration Bill
From the Associated Press
April 14, 2006

WASHINGTON — President Bush accused Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday of "single-handedly thwarting" action on immigration legislation, and got a brisk retort in return.

"President Bush has as much credibility on immigration as he does on Iraq and national security," shot back the Nevada Democrat.

and it is an utter outrage. Why there is no policing of these kinds of officials who lie with impunity is beyond me, but frankly, the vice principal should be prosecuted, the subject of a civil suit, and barred from ever having a job in education again. The only way we are going to stop people who bully others into suicide is to start showing them what removal of their freedom is all about.

26. Ah, political hardball and manipulation of language and intent.
Such a fun sport, trying to take a fastball and make a homerun out of it.

Or, rather, like having a spinball ball batted across the net in ping-pong, and having your opponent return it with a different spin.

"At another point, Republicans tried to substitute misdemeanor charges for felonies in the bill. Democrats opposed that effort, with at least some of them saying they wanted no criminal penalties at all. Republicans then passed the overall bill — including felony charges — on a largely party-line vote.

"With public polling showing overwhelming opposition to the felony provision, GOP leaders said this week they would make sure any bill that cleared Congress was shorn of the provision."

So on the face of it, the felony provision in the House bill stands because dems wanted no criminal charges instead of a misdemeanor. What was intended as a principled stand presumably for both principle and politics--not supporting a better version of the legislation but instead holding out for moral purity and perfect, at leat on this point--is portrayed as letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Sometimes I hate partial truths.

I'm sure we can post enough pictures of the Prez holding hands with a Saudi prince as an explanation for why Osama is still loose....followed by images of every nutcase televangelist posing with senior Repuke officials....followed by film of Laura and George waving from Air Force One to people stranded on the roofs in the flooded Gulf Coast. . .followed by the words...large across the screen. . .Republican Family Values: Corruption. Deception. Manipulation. And lies.

Then have a speaker say: Ever wonder which Bible the Republicans really read?

95. Why is this!?
Why is it illegal to say something false about a product, but not about a political opponent? IMHO, if it can be proven false or even misleading it should not be allowed to run, pure and simple. (I don't care whose ad it is!)

We are all being played by those who are currently in power. Sometimes it seems like a comedy skit where the entrenched - incumbent Democrats are often the perennial straight men,i.e., forever the minority party but still getting fat off of our corporate big brother.

The easiest thing to do is just copy-and-paste part of a sentence, and enclose it within quotes.

The OP shouldn't have used the LA Times article, because it requires registration.

most of them side with the democratic party. The only Hispanics I know that side with Republicans on a consistent level are Cubans. the majority of the Latinos I work in the community with don't like Bush and don't care what he or the Republican party says, but they are a very trusting and may fall for this bullshit because Bush is seemingly "pro" immigration. I don't think it will happen though....

That is an excellent start! :-) I'm envisioning a whole
version of DU that runs in spanish, at the very least a
full GD, LBN, GDP, version of DU that was spanish for the
millions of democratic voters who would rather speak spanish.

Perhaps if the underground embraced it ahead of mainstream culture,
we could leapfrog an age of divided lingualism, a divided future
voting public and a divided party.

This is worse than a lie (which is a factual inaccuracy communicated for some gain). This is THEM passing an immoral piece of legislation, KNOWING it was immoral, and then blaming their opponent for it. I can't think of anything more despicable. Kinda reminds me of old Red Scare tricks in Italy (i.e. the Bologna bombings) - where groups associated with the government would commit terrorist acts and the government would blame the Communist party. Because political agenda is way more important than human life. Just like the GOP.

It will come to light and bite them in the ass big time. They WILL lose their majority this year. I'll be surprised if they get over 30% of hispanic vote.

Particularly Republians, but I'm fed up with the whole lot of them except for a few who manage to maintain their integrity against all this partisan game-playing. I doubt there are more than 10% of congress people who put what is best for the country ahead of what is best for them politically.

Edit: It's also the reason why congresspeople make poor presidential candidates. The facts regarding how a particular vote or votes were cast can be twisted to confuse the public. It's unfortunate, but that's the way the legislative process works.
