Provisions for guest workers also needed in immigration bill, senator says

During the Senate's debate about proposed changes to the nation's immigration laws Monday, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he supported beefing up the nation's borders, but he said an overhaul of immigration laws to allow for guest workers also was needed.
"Enforcement alone won't fix our broken immigration system," Reid said. "The bottom line is that people are going to continue to risk their lives to come here because they want to work, and they need to provide for their families," Reid said.

Reid's office reported receiving about 2,000 comments from Nevadans via mail, e-mail, faxes and phone calls in the past week alone concerning immigration. Additionally, "several hundred" people from other parts of the country made their views known to Reid, the Senate minority leader, his spokeswoman Sharyn Stein said. She said a breakdown of those for and against the Senate measure that includes guest worker provisions was not available Monday.
