Rumsfeld: U.S. Struggles to Combat Anti-American Propaganda

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said today the United States military has not figured out how to combat anti-American propaganda by Iraqi militants, including a widely reported claim that a Sunday attack by U.S. and Iraqi special forces targeted innocent Shiite Muslims praying in a mosque.

The raid, which killed 16 followers of the Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr--an outspoken opponent of the U.S. presence in Iraq--targeted a terrorist cell responsible for attacks on soldiers and civilians, U.S. military officials say. But a false claim by Sadr's aides that a mosque was targeted received widespread attention, Rumsfeld said.

"Clearly, the United States government has not gotten to the point where we are as deft and clever and facile as the enemy that is perfectly capable of lying, having it printed all over the world, and there's no penalty for having lied," Rumsfeld said at an afternoon news conference at the Pentagon. "Indeed, there was a reward (for the enemy) because a great many people read the lie and believed it."

...

"Those are not religious instruments," Rumsfeld interjected, as photographs of the weapons were displayed for reporters.

4. Dead bodies -- sleeping children killed -- people tortured
Rumsfeld is battling the facts of death and hardship that the average Iraqi sees. No amount of "feel good" messages paid for by the USA will breath life into a dead child.

Top general wants formal review of Pentagon propaganda program

At a Pentagon news conference later in the day, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld said he expected the department to review its policy on whether it is acceptable for the military to pay journalists to run stories provided anonymously by the U.S. military. He declined to state his view of the practice.

“I said we'd take it under advisement and take a look at it. I'm not going to take a judgment off the top of my head,” Rumsfeld said.

Such a review typically would be done by Rumsfeld's office rather than by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

<snip>

Casey ordered an initial review of the program which found that the Lincoln Group – a private company that was handling the program in Iraq – did not violate its contract with the military. Casey said he had no plans to stop the practice.

Pentagon officials have defended the program as a necessary tool in the war on terror, saying it is critical to get an accurate message out to the Iraqis about what the U.S. is doing in their country.

In the past, Rumsfeld has said the military must use “nontraditional means” in the face of widespread disinformation campaigns by the insurgency in Iraq.

Rumsfeld: U.S. losing hearts and minds

....Earlier, he stopped at Shanksville, Pa., to see for the first time the place where hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in 2001, killing all 40 passengers and crew members shortly after hijacked planes crashed into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The Sept. 11 Commission report said the hijackers crashed the plane as passengers tried to take control of the cockpit.

On a tour of the site among rolling hills and meadows, Rumsfeld paused in front of several rows of angel-shaped figures on rods that bear the names of the passengers and crew who died aboard the airliner. In brief remarks, Rumsfeld said he wanted to pay his respects at "the place where America really started to fight back."

10. Here's how we do it.
The next president APOLOGIZES to the world for the antics of our insane (current) president..

He/She then announces that ALL military interventions in foreign countries will CEASE immediately.

We bring our troops home and re-group HERE to rebuild our "saggy" military and its image.

We start concentrating on issues that IMPROVE the world...like REAL environmental science, and a SHARING of world resources..

We CANCEL bogus "trade agreements" that strip indigenous people everywhere of their birthright resources (water-gas-oil-gold-diamond-etc)..

We remove "personhood" status from corporations so they do not have EXTRA powers

We revisit the olden-days when Robber Barons were dealt with harshly.

That's a nice starting line up.. there's more, but that's enough for the first few months
