Abortion-rights groups back Casey opponent
With few places to turn in a high-profile Pennsylvania Senate race dominated by abortion foes, the National Organization for Women (NOW) political action committee and the Feminist Majority Fund endorsed lesser-known Democratic contender Alan Sandals yesterday.

Sandals faces an uphill nomination battle against Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., the son of the late governor, and Chuck Pennacchio for the right to take on Republican incumbent Rick Santorum in November. Sandals has been running to the socially centrist Casey’s left, and the NOW endorsement underscores the dissatisfaction of abortion-rights activists with Casey, who has consistently led Santorum by double digits in polls.

Longtime abortion-rights advocate Kate Michelman, a former head of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, now known as NARAL Pro-Choice America, had considered a challenge to Casey but decided against it.
.....
“Can feminists, progressives and even moderates join them behind a candidate who does not recognize the importance of allowing women access to a full range of reproductive healthcare options? The simple answer is no,” the statement reads.

1. The Hill shows its true colors in this article
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 10:09 AM by Mass
How many times did he use "abortion foes" and "abortion rights" rather than "pro-choice".

I dont know enough about Sandals to know where he stands compared to Pennachio, but I can certainly understand why these groups would make this choice.

2. The Hill leans, it's true
It's just that they sometimes have significant things I don't see in the dailies.

NARAL's refusal to endorse another candidate, taken with their request that we thank Lieberman for voting against Alito, even though he voted for cloture, makes them look obsolete.

3. It looks like Sandals wants civil unions, not gay marriage?
GAY MARRIAGE

I am opposed to discrimination and intolerance of any kind, regardless of whether it is based on race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Based on my opposition to discrimination, I support civil unions and other social arrangements that afford the same set of legal protections, rights, and benefits as marriage to a same-sex couple.

In any case, pro-choice or not, I never trust anyone with a beard.
