Fears over Afghan convert trial
(snip)
The US and three Nato allies have expressed concern over reports that a Muslim convert to Christianity could face the death penalty in Afghanistan.

Abdul Rahman is charged with rejecting Islam and could be executed under Sharia law unless he reconverts.
(snip)

(snip)
Conservatives still dominate the Afghan judiciary, four years after the Taleban were overthrown, and Afghanistan's post-Taleban constitution is based on Sharia law.
(snip)

(snip)
Speaking alongside Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah at a press conference in Washington, US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns urged Afghanistan to respect Mr Rahman's religious rights. However, he did not ask for his immediate release and said he respected Afghan sovereignty.

1. Journalists have blood on their hands
I have been thinking about this story non-stop since I first heard it yesterday.

I think this story should be on the front page of every newspaper. Bush keeps saying what a "noble cause" it is for the U.S. to spread freedom in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Freedom's on the March" "A Beacon of Freedom in the Middle East" Blah Blah Blah....... The news media needs to call the administration on these lies. Afghanistan is STILL controlled by religious nuts and it is not "free".

Just like the claim of WMD's Bush's spreading democracy theory is just a bunch of bullshit. It sure would be nice to see some "investigative journalism". The entire "Middle Eastern War" is being waged over the Euro and I have NEVER seen it even mentioned in the press as a possible reason. The media just accepts the ever-changing Bush & Co. war rational they dish out without researching a damn thing. I mean, is it that hard to find out that Afghanistan law in no way resembles a free society? How about you journalists, I don't know, maybe INVESTIGATE & REPORT all crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq in which you can receive the death penalty and then possibly ask the administration how this fits with their newest war rational?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

4. Taliban regime (Salam Zaeef)
"We vow to help ensure security and peace and take part in reconstruction of our
country," he said. Among those, who have taken up the offer, were former Taliban
Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil and Taliban regime's Ambassador to
Pakistan Abdul Salam Zaeef.

The men travelled from various provinces from across Afghanistan to Kabul for a
ceremony at which their surrender was announced by the head of the government's
reconciliation commission Sebghattullah Mujaddadi.

2. Can't Mayor Karzai do something?
Or does he indeed control only 6 blocks of Kabul and the escape route to the airport?

9. "We think he could be mad.
He is not a normal person. He doesn't talk like a normal person."

....
Last week, Rahman told reporters, "They want to sentence me
to death, and I accept it, but I am not a deserter and not an infidel."

....
Moayuddin Baluch, a religious adviser to President Hamid Karzai
says Rahman will undergo a psychological exam.

Will Salam Zaeef do the psychological exam? :eyes:

6. Ya gotta wonder how much Mad George offered them.

Besides which, the poppy crop must be harvested. Can't let a little war interfere with the Bush family profits.

And yes, Heather, it IS all about the dollar vs. the euro. It's why we're in Iraq and it's why we are threatening Iran. The Bourse, remember?

7. I don't know why death for apostasy is such a surprise.
Sharia is the rule of law there, as it is in many muslim countries. I don't think any country should be putting anyone to death, but they've BEEN doing it.

8. You have to wonder...
Do these idiots really believe this shit "sharia law" or use it just to keep power, or a combination of the both....

All religious extremists, or anyone who believes their bible literally, should be isolated on some remote part of the planet, together...
