3 more bodies found in block of Lower 9 (NOLA)
Storm victims may be difficult to identify

http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/frontpage/index.ssf?/base/news-5/114292536090780.xml

Fire Department recovery workers, tipped off by student volunteers who were clearing Katrina debris, found three bodies on the same block in the Lower 9th Ward, a New Orleans fire chief said Monday.

The discovery of the bodies in the 2400 block of Tupelo Street, near the St. Bernard Parish line -- two of them within 20 feet of each other in the same debris pile -- brings to seven the number of bodies discovered since the special operations unit of the Fire Department resumed recovery work on March 2, said Fire Chief Steve Glynn, chief of special operations for the New Orleans Fire Department.

He said six have been found in the Lower 9th Ward, and one in Lakeview. Most have been found under the debris of collapsed or shifted houses. Only one has been found in a house that was still standing -- in an attic.None of the bodies has been identified, and all are so badly decomposed that the Orleans Parish coroner's office couldn't determine their genders.

1. RIP. Glad students are observant.
I wonder if the next move is banning volunteers?

3. You know that's where it's going...they are only going to allow
Halliburton contractors in so they hide the body count!!

4. I see SCI did it's normal, bag-up job at recovery. Maybe we should have
paid them by the body. Of course, then they'd have started whacking homeless people to pad their accounts.

See what happens when you hire Republicans to do an honest day's work? You don't get one.

5. Why is it that unexperienced students can find bodies
while experienced professionals cannot?

Strike one more against FEMA.

They had to remove a HOUSE to find the bodies.

7. The obscenity continues...
Let's see, 18 days, 7 bodies, that's one every 2-3 days. And they're not looking with cadaver dogs for these latest ones, it's visual. How many more could be found with dogs?

I am glad that up to three more families will eventually be able to bury these loved ones.

I saw something about a cadaver dog team being sent back to wherever they came from because no one could figure out who should pay for the handler's motel rooms. Sheesh!

8. After six months they are only now
getting around to a thorough clean-up that is uncovering bodies? And using student volunteers to assist the local fire dept.?

This is beyond shameful. You'd think after the initial massive screw-up, the federal government would have been doing everything possible these past months to make amends. Instead, they've seemingly disappeared.

I am disgusted beyond words that this is going on.

To now? Answer from the Commander. Du, Du, I will have to wait until I talk to my handlers to give you an answer.
The severity of this disaster will not be found out until the Dem's control all three branches of Government and can have a true investigation. Kick and Rec.

17. Katrina proved the government was willing to let people die
Why should 9/11 have been any different?

9/11 Truth?

"Not answering that," he said, warning not to ask others in the company, which had
lost men on 9/11. This didn’t mean he wasn’t of the opinion that if he lived to be
a million he’d never "see anything as corrupt, bullshit, and sad as what
happened at the WTC.

"They got their gold and shipped us to Fresh Kills," he said.
Call it one more conspiracy theory, but many uniformed firefighters
believe the powers that be cared more about finding the gold reserves
held in vaults beneath the Trade Center than the bodies of their fallen brothers.

19. Why were recovery efforts stopped? Too embarrassing to king george?
from the link:

The coroner's office couldn't provide an updated total number of bodies found since recovery efforts resumed last month...

The special unit, which assisted in many boat rescues after the storm, recovered the bodies of 68 storm victims in neighborhoods across the city from October through December...

"A lot of people don't realize, they are surprised that we're still finding bodies -- the first workers who showed up after the storm were rescue workers, and they really were looking for survivors, not dead people. And they didn't have a list like we do of missing people, and it was so difficult to get through these houses sometimes, they just had to call and listen for a reply. You see how many times you see they wrote NE on the houses -- that means no entry. So no, it doesn't surprise me that we are finding people still."
end>

Since they knew there were people in there, why did they stop recovering bodies?

20. no federal funding
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 06:27 PM by pitohui
so, yeah, i will presume the real reason is the feds didn't want to know how many have died

our state is poor and ran out of most of the money for recovering the dead round abt october 1 if i recall correctly, so the recovery effort "officially" ended on that day, although of course it continues but on a limited and crippled basis

believe that makes it 10 bodies found just in the last 3 weeks, since they have finally been able to start removing debris in lower 9th and lakeview

of disasters under bush, but this is unf*n believable. New Orleans ran out of money and FEMA said, "sorry, we don't have money for this. We have billions of tax dollars to give to Halliburton, but we CAN'T AFFORD to recover the bodies of our citizens."

What a gang of criminals and thieves are infesting Washington. And, as posted down thread, the only way we might find out how many died in NOLA is if Michael Moore does a movie.

People should be outraged. Hell they probably are. But the fantasy on GOP television just keeps up with their ridiculous blather.

23. Actually
the one found in the Lakeview area was by a cadaver dog. It was the first day the teams were there this last time, before they pulled out because no one could figure out how to pay the hotel bills.

26. I think the only way to get the real body count is for Micheal Moore to
make a NOLA movie. The Repukes would scorn him, but in the end, the real death toll would be forced out.
