7. Maybe now these loony wingnuts will understand he did provide balance.
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 05:19 PM by MissMarple
The talking heads jumped on it like it was fresh meat. They just didn't bother to ascertain the facts. Our Governor Owens and former Rep. Bob Schaeffer, now on the State Board of Education, tried to make political hay with it, too. They didn't bother with understanding the facts, either. They both attacked this man in the public forum armed with nothing but supposition, innuendo, and political cynicism. And both of them claim to be such good "Christians". With Christians like these two we don't a devil.

And I feel sorry for Sean Allen. He was used by his dad, the rightwing media, and their politicians. He may never understand what this was really all about.

If we had a serious Right in this country, it would make this man's life miserable. It would force him to resign and leave the town. We are fools if we think the liberals who run our schools (with an occasional assist from phony country-club "Republicans") will do our job for us.

Today in Washington, President Bush was asked about the Bennish controversy.

"I think people should be allowed to criticize me all they want. And they do," he said.

17. Best LTTE Today on Bennish in Denver Post
Re: "Lay down the law: Never compare anyone to Hitler," March 6 Jim Spencer column.

It's wrong to compare George Bush to Adolf Hitler. When you look at Bush's record of distorting the truth, fostering a climate of fear, creating secret prisons, authorizing torture, manipulating the media, avoiding responsibility, supporting dictators friendly to his cause, abrogating international law, keeping secrets from the public, paranoia, military supremacy, surveillance of citizens, payoffs to cronies, etc., the only accurate comparison is between his administration and the government of the former Soviet Union.

20. the reson--looks like he presented both sides of the issue.

The district's investigation centered on whether Bennish provided both sides of political issues while teaching class. Part of district policy states that teachers must present balanced subject matter when discussing political issues.

Overland sophomore Sean Allen made the recording on Feb. 1, 2006, the day after President Bush's State of the Union Address.

Superintendent Monte Moses declined to offer specifics of the investigation or its findings but said administrators and Bennish now "have a good understanding."

Bennish spoke briefley at the news conference Friday. "I will be back in the classroom on Monday and I am excited to continue to teach," he said

"I would do it a million times over because I feel like it was the right thing to do, and my conscience wouldn't let me go on and listen to the things Mr. Bennish was saying and indoctrinating students."

Indoctrinating students? Poor kid. His parents have really f*#&ed him up.

42. Actually, I now think that all of the classrooms should have cameras, like
school buses. It would cut out a lot of the crap on both sides (neither staff nor students are blameless) and stop a lot of nonsense claims. Its the old would you do this if it ended up on the NYT/Nightly News test, and it has some merit.

Colo. Teacher Accused Of Bias Is Reinstated
He Had Likened Bush's Speech to Hitler's
Associated Press
Saturday, March 11, 2006; Page A06

DENVER, March 10 -- A high school teacher who was placed on leave after comparing President Bush's State of the Union address to speeches by Adolf Hitler has been reinstated, his attorney and school officials said Friday.Officials declined to say whether social studies instructor Jay Bennish faced disciplinary action. His attorney, David Lane, said Bennish would be back in the classroom Monday "with full pay."

Bennish had been on paid leave from Overland High School in suburban Aurora since March 1 while Cherry Creek School District determined whether he violated a district rule that teachers present balancing viewpoints in the classroom.Superintendent Monte Moses declined to offer specifics of the investigation or its findings, but said administrators and Bennish now "have a good understanding."

During a Feb. 1 lecture in a geography class, Bennish said some of Bush's State of the Union address the night before "sounds a lot like the things that Adolf Hitler used to say." Bennish later said the lecture was intended to stimulate his students to think critically. He also said he presents balancing viewpoints in class but not always at the same time. Lane acknowledged that was a mistake.

"Jay's teaching style will perhaps be, as some would say, a little more fair and balanced on a minute-to-minute basis," Lane said. "When you put out one side, put out the other then and there."

WOULD YOU WORK UNDER SUCH A HITLERESQUE STRUCTURE? I DIDN'T THINK SO.
