20. Now I'm a conspiracy theorist...
The repugs will override a veto and use it in November to show how tough they are on security. They HAVE to distance themselves from the asshole to even stand a chance of keeping their jobs. And it wouldn't surprise me if this whole thing was set up by Rove to play out just this way.

35. That may happen, but it isn't what the white house wants
the port deal is an inside job for the bush family and their close friends. The repukes may stop it for political considerations, but bushco really wants this deal

40. I figured that as well.
The GOPukes will ALWAYS bend over and do anything for their master.

They are supposedly against this baaaaaad deal but they talk about changing the law to make his snooping legal.

This is all a setup.

44. I have considered this reasoning. I don't think it's going to the help any
repuke candidates very much. There will be just too many other votes in any incumbent's record in support of the king for it to help much.

He'll sign the bill and write on the cover that this doesn't apply to the UAE.

His family portraits hang in the hallways of the UAE sheik's palaces. He's owned, what else can he do?

8. Yea, CNN reported this just minutes after they said AF1 just
returned to DC! Welcome back SHRUB!!!!!

I think a 62-2 vote in committee is pretty rare these days, and if this is any indication of the full house vote, Shrub can vetoe all he wants, they'll over-ride the veto!!!!

"rebelion" that developed over torture. And how it was made to look as if the rebles and their hero McCain won? And how Bush nullified it with his signing statement? And how McCain didn't say squat?
Wonder how this charade will play out.

"Just one more time congress people are second guessing a President who has an excellent track record of defending the country, and the WOT, stuck on stupid congress critters."

"The funny thing is that the "true conservatives" bought the schumer line that this was a "secret" deal, hook, line, and sinker. When it was not, DPWorld bought P&O and all was above board, but scream the Arabs are taking over the ports(when they are not) and it was stampede to beleive schumer's lies."

"Just mark my words on this. If Congress blocks the Dubai Ports from managing the ports terminals then the UAE government will ask our military to leave their naval and air bases there, as well as kicked out our CIA and FBI agents from their country. It will be a great strategic loss of an ally and military bases in the midst of the war on terror. Also do not be surprised if Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain will have similar reaction to us in consolidation with their brethren in the UAE. Even to make it worse the Arab dominant OPEC may cut its production by 1 million barrel and the oil prices will soar. Already two other non Arab countries (Iran and Venezuela) were asking to cut production."

and this one just for shits and spelling giggles...

"If a gov't is going to be in charge of ANY operation in the U.S., I'd much rather it be our gov't. as opposed to especially, a mozlem gov't..."

47.  GOP House Panel Votes to Block Ports Deal
By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago

In a congressional election-year repudiation of President Bush, a House panel dominated by Republicans voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to block a Dubai-owned firm from taking control of some U.S port operations. Democrats clamored for a vote in the Senate, too.

By 62-2, the House Appropriations Committee voted to bar DP World, run by the government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, from holding leases or contracts at U.S. ports. The landslide vote was the strongest signal yet that more than three weeks of White House efforts to stunt congressional opposition to the deal have not been successful.

Bush has promised to veto any such measure passed by Congress. But there is widespread public opposition to the deal and the GOP fears losing its advantage on the issue of national security in this fall's elections.

The White House said the president's position was unchanged.

49. Fox said it best:
"House Republicans feared that if they did not move to block the deal now, Democrats would force their own vote that would be successful. That would only invite criticism of the GOP's national security record, which historically has been the party's strength."

Port sale: It's all about dope.

by ben masel
Wed Feb 22, 2006 at 09:20:49 AM PDT

Long before oil money, Dubai and Abu Dhabi were wealthy smuggling ports, with close ties to the ports of what's now Pakistan.

The player behind Dubai Ports World, UAE President and Emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan, is the son of the guy behind Bank of Commrce and Credit International, which expedited the heroin shipments, and return money flows of the US first Afghan War in the '80s. the Kerry Committee BCCI report issued in 1992.

ben masel's diary :: ::

From Section 14 of the report
Abu Dhabi was present at BCCI's creation as one of two providers of BCCI's capital. It was BCCI's largest depositor, and its largest borrower, and for most of BCCI's existence, its largest shareholder. The relationship between the two entities was, as Price Waterhouse told the Bank of England days before BCCI's closure, "very close," with BCCI providing services to the ruling family of Abu Dhabi far beyond the ordinary relationship of a bank to either its shareholders or depositors...

As Abu Dhabi's representative, Ahmed Al Sayegh, testified, "in excess of $2 billion was entrusted to Abedi and Naqvi for investment by Their Highnesses Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Khalifa under a power of attorney between 1980 and 1990."(32) Al Sayegh did not identify how much in excess of $2 billion was entrusted to BCCI, but given Abu Dhabi's testimony that it lost $6 billion in all in BCCI's collapse, the amount must have been considerable.

If you do go there, do be careful of the exploding heads. Grab some popcorn, open a cold beverage, and enjoy!

54. Bush has just (again) threatened a VETO
show-down on the Hill.

Bush's ego is so huge and so well known (that he turns against folks that he perceives as have turned against him) - that he can't NOT try to push a showdown on this. To Bush - this is a slap - a suggestion that he and his folks made a mistake on his one issue that he was considered favorably upon for a long time - national security. He appears unlikely to back down - even if he is forcing the stability of some repubs in congress reelection hopes. Thus, this is personal to bush. It is also - due to the public outcry - of great import to many repubs to be seen as stopping the ports deal per their reelections.

The question is now... will back door deals with gopers on the hill and arm twisting/threats by rove and the bushmachine... which are inevitably going on as I type... will lead to a face saving (for bush) back down/compromise - or whether bush's political capital is so far gone - and the fears for reelection of the GOP in the house are now so HIGH that such threats will not work and this plays out with a bush veto and a congressional override.

Ironically for bush - if he were to spend his FIRST veto in five years on this - his "popularity" and public image would tank even further - the irony is that he is fighting to "win" b/c his ego drives him (as if somewhere in his infamous "gut reactions" that he trusts implicitly (even though it is often wrong) "winning this" will bolster him.)
