Statement comes as momentum builds to refer Tehran to Security Council
Russia’s foreign minister indicated Wednesday he was opposed to sanctions in response to the Iranian nuclear crisis, a day after U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney said Iran would face consequences if it persisted in defying the international community.

Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday Moscow opposed both U.N. Security Council sanctions and military action because such measures rarely achieve their intended goals. Lavrov's announcement came hours after Iran threatened the United States with “harm and pain” for its role in hauling Tehran before the Security Council.

The United States may have the power to cause harm and pain but it is also susceptible to harm and pain. So if the United States wishes to choose that path, let the ball roll,” it said in a statement obtained by Reuters on the sidelines of a U.N. nuclear watchdog board meeting in Vienna.

But the United States and its European allies said Iran’s nuclear intransigence left the world no choice but to ask for Security Council action. The council could impose economic and political sanctions on Iran. The statements were delivered to the 35-member board of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is meeting to focus on Tehran’s refusal to freeze uranium enrichment.

1. Good, I hope Russia does veto anything put forward to the
Security Council. This whole thing is nothing but utter bullshit, imo.

3. You better hope that the UN goes ahead with Sanctions
If they don't Bush will say that the UN did nothing to even try to hinder Iran so he will act before the 2006 elections.

If sanctions are approved in the next month or two Bush will be forced to wait for some time before being able to say and have the media buy that sanctions had not worked and its time to attack.

4. Nope, in reality, it doesn't matter to the bush cabal what goes
through the Security Council or not, this is merely window dressing, nothing more, to use the argument that the UN would not do 'the right thing'. If the UN were to issue sanctions, you can be VERY sure the 'top of the line' intelligence the US has will report Iran is breaching the sanctions almost immediately after the sanctions were passed.

5. Of course they will

Do you want the UN to try doing something and prove its effective?

Because if not the US isn't going to be the one that strikes.

Israel will and they will strike fast and hard as they have promised to do.

And, if Iran attacks the US in Iraq which they probably will do Bush has a reason to declare war against Iran and get near total support in the Congress for doing so.

8. Approving fallacious sanctions in no way prove it's effectiveness
quite the opposite, it would bolster the belief that the US bully boy runs the show. If Israel (and the US by extension) strikes pre-emptively they will pay a very heavy price diplomatically and possibly something worse and Israel well knows it.

Israel would put itself in the place of being directly compared to Germany's attack on Poland and would find itself, with the exception of a much depleted US, isolated.

"And, if Iran attacks the US in Iraq which they probably will do Bush has a reason to declare war against Iran and get near total support in the Congress for doing so."

Why would Iran pre-emptively attack the US in Iraq, it has no need to do so?

If Israel were to attack Iran with the nudge-nudge, wink-wink support of the US, watch all that badly needed foreign money from the Saudis, China and many other countries be pulled out faster than you can blink.

7. Russia could be looking to improve its bargaining position ....
Russia knows Bush is an idiot and he's digging this country into a deep grave and while Russia has something to lose if the U.S. attacks Iran, but it potentially could gain something bigger ... Europe. If oil supplements are disrupted then Europe will need Russia to pick up the slack
