Trade with China helps Cuba to move up a gear

Cuba is turning to Chinese companies rather than western ones to modernise its crippled transport system at a cost of more than $1bn, continuing a trend of favouring the fellow Communist country that has made Beijing Cuba's second trading partner after Venezuela.

Buses plying Cuba's highways increasingly come from the Yutong Bus Company and railway locomotives from the 7th of February works on Beijing's outskirts. Cuba's ports are being revamped with Chinese equipment, in part, to handle millions of Chinese domestic appliances that began arriving last year. Oil rigs along Cuba's northwest heavy oil belt boast Chinese flags, and this is only the beginning, says Fidel Castro, Cuba's president.

Ha ha ha America.

How can this country be so dumb to turn down business. Methinks it has to do with the Cuba Immigrants down in Miami with an alterior political agenda that have bought off the politicans..... :)

2. The ft writer either doesn't know much about Cuban recent history
or knows and is trying to conceal it. Cuba has tried in the last few years to buy some of Bermuda's old buses they were selling due to getting new ones.

I think it was in 2003 that the American counsel gave Bermuda the understanding things could get rocky if Bermuda proceeded with its sale of used buses, and some cars, and 3 ferries, and they succumbed to the pressure and gave up.

I just discovered this evening the Bacardi rum Cuban "exiles" are based in Bermuda. I guess it's not hard to figure out how the news traveled so quickly to the State Department, right? It's not as if Otto Reich, who used to be a lobbyist for Bacardi, who was still in the State Department in 2003 would have been involved!

It hasn't been for lack of trying to buy buses in this hemisphere first that has Cuba looking so far away for those desperately needed vehicles.

5. Bacardi headquarters may be in Bermuda
but the family itself lives in Miami I believe. The distillery in PR permits easy access to US markets. I know they also have distilleries in Brazil and have a large share of the rum market there.

7. Thanks, Mika, for the info. I had never heard this, although I heard
about the plane going down.

I just did a quick search and found this story:
Bacardi heir dies in US seaplane crash
Email Print Normal font Large font December 21, 2005 - 1:29PM

A wing apparently separated from the fuselage of the twin-engine seaplane that crashed off Miami Beach, killing at least 19 people aboard, a US federal safety official said.

Mark Rosenker, acting chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters, the breaking apart of the aircraft could be seen in amateur video footage of the Grumman G-73T Turbine Mallard, filmed in its final moments on Monday above water.

"It is rare that you get to see an accident while it is going on," Rosenker said of the video, which shows a part of the 58-year-old plane spiralling downward and belching thick black smoke as the rest of the aircraft plowed into the sea in the background.
(snip)

In Hamilton, Bermuda, Bacardi Limited, the world's largest privately held spirits company, said a great-great grandson of its founder died in the plane crash together with his wife.

Sergio Danguillecourt, a member of the company's board of directors since 1992, was 42, the company said in a statement.

It had never registered with me what the family name is. I've seen photos of the large building they gave to the university there in Bacardi's name. Very expensive gift!

4. Right. China owns America now. Policy will change when China says so.
Of course China wants all of the business it can get, so don't expect any change soon.

On a related note.. great movie..

Ha Ha Ha America
