Hurricane Evacuees Leave FEMA Hotels

ATLANTA (AP) --

~snip~

It was the last day FEMA directly paid hotel bills for many evacuees outside Louisiana and Mississippi. Storm victims in about 7,400 hotel rooms in those two hard-hit states have been granted another extension through at least March 15.

~snip~

"A hotel is looked at as a short-term solution. People have had six months to find long term housing," said FEMA spokeswoman Bettina Hutchings, adding that a lot of people are settling in, but may eventually return to their homes on the Gulf Coast as housing and employment become more available there.

Not all refugees had to turn in their hotel room keys on Wednesday. Those who qualified for individual assistance were free to use that money to stay in their hotel rooms, while FEMA granted some evacuees extensions under special circumstances.

1. There were still people here in Florida homeless a year after
all the hurricanes here went through. It took that long to fight with insurance companies and FEMA. And that was an extremely small amount of people compared to NOLA and MS.

2. And now....
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 09:26 AM by SoCalDem
all we're gonna hear about is how TRASHED the rooms are , and how much money FEMA will have to pay to "repair" the rooms. Fox will have camera crews in there filming rooms to show how "unworthy" the people were..

6. Homelessness is fine with GOP, but can be ended easily by dems.
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 03:37 PM by oscar111
just toss the refugees in with local hmless, and in a few weeks no one will think about refugees any more. So the GOP thinks.

refugees deserve, like everyone else, to have a home fully paid for, and a guaranteed job. Landordism is no good for anyone. The Job Shortage is the cause of today's joblessness. End the JS. See sig below for link on ending the forced job shortage.. advised by Galbraith, Clinton's S of LABOR Robert Reich, two Nobel laureates and the archbishop of Milwaukee, plus dozens of professors.
