Oil refinery attack foiled, Saudis say

Vehicles reportedly were packed with explosives; pipeline fire started

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Suicide bombers tried but failed to storm a major oil refinery in Saudi Arabia on Friday, according to officials and TV reports.

“Security forces foiled an attempted suicide attack at the Abqaiq refinery using at least two cars,” a security official told Reuters.

Al-Arabiya television said Saudi forces killed the attackers

The attackers did apparently start a pipeline fire that was later brought under control, the TV station said.

2. I think there still might have been an explosion
I believe the Saudis are claiming to have shot one of the approaching bomb-laden cars, which caused it to explode which started the pipeline fire. It wasn't yet where it needed to be to blow up the pipelinet, but close enough to do damage and start a fire. All of that does seem to be getting played down a bit. It seems like a pretty big deal either way!

3. Suicide bomb attack at Saudi oil refinery

By Our Foreign Staff

TWO cars carrying suicide bombers exploded after coming under fire as they tried to drive through the gates of an oil refinery. At least two of the militants died. Two security guards were also killed, and two were wounded.
The Abqaiq plant in the Eastern Province handles two thirds of Saudi Arabia’s production. It was the first attack on an oil installation in the kingdom, which has waged a crackdown on Islamic militants.

Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on the internet, although the authenticity of the claim could not be verified.

Al-Qaeda militants have previously attacked oil company offices. Operations at the plant were not affected. “Export operations continued in full,” the Interior Ministry said. The price of oil jumped by more than $1.20 (70p) on world markets after the attack.

The attack took place

5. "authenticity of the claim could not be verified"...BS!

That's BS. Everything on the internet involving TCP/IP is tracable back to its origin, even if they use 80 proxies. All the forum softwares available out there are easily crackable too.

Then again, that's IF they really want to find who's "al-Qaeda"...
