http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/business/13929186.htmWASHINGTON - Brushing off public demands from the two top Republicans in Congress, President Bush on Tuesday said a deal allowing an Arab company to run commercial operations at six major U.S. seaports -- including the Port of Miami-Dade -- should go forward and that he'll veto any effort to stop it.
Both House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said the proposed takeover by Dubai Ports World, a state-owned company from the United Arab Emirates, of British firm Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. posed potential national security risks. South Florida Republican lawmakers Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Clay Shaw and Mark Foley also weighed in, criticizing the sale.
The deal would give Dubai Ports World a 50 percent stake in the Port of Miami Terminal Operating Company, one of three terminals at the Port of Miami-Dade. The company handles about half the cargo containers at the port, and a minority partner has sued to stop the sale.
