Crisis in Georgia escalates - USSR
Embattled Georgian President Eduard Shevardndaze sought support from erstwhile enemies yesterday as thousands of protesters camped out for a third day in the capital Tbilisi to demand his resignation.

Fears of a violent outcome to the stand-off were revived when Georgia's interior minister said he was transferring troops to the capital, although he said the deployment had nothing to do with political events there.

Angered by a parliamentary election eight days ago which they claimed was rigged, about 7,000 demonstrators were massed outside the parliament building in Tbilisi, continuing a wave of unrest which has left Sheverdnadze fighting for his political survival in the former Soviet republic.
