(UK) Cleric calls on Mohammed cartoonist to be executed
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 03:27 PM by ECH1969
Omar Bakri Mohammed, has said the cartoonist behind caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed that have sparked outrage across the Arab world should be tried and executed under Islamic law.

The cleric said the cartoonist had insulted Islam and must pay the price, as three people were killed during protests against the cartoons in Afghanistan.

"The insult has been established now by everybody, Muslim and non-Muslim, and everybody condemns the cartoonist and condemns the cartoon," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"However, in Islam, God said, and the messenger Mohammed said, whoever insults a prophet, he must be punished and executed.

2. Oh, yeah,
religion of peace.

Moderate Muslims need to publicly disassociate themselves from these whack jobs. Sharia law does not obtain, yet, in the UK

14. Moderate Muslims DO disassociate themselves
from guys like this, often and publicly.

I think it's about time the rest of us learn to disassociate guys like this from moderate Muslims in our own perspective.

Peace.

17. Some do, it is true
but what about CAIR, for example? What about the leadership in Saudi Arabia. How about some denunciations from Islamic countries?

21. They HAVE spoken out about this
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 06:42 PM by meganmonkey
Lebanon has apologized to Denmark. That is in practically every article about this.

As for CAIR, well, no one is talking about them. Why don't you contact some media sources so they'll spread the word?

I found it in ONE major US paper:

The cartoons were the topic of most of Friday's sermons at Chicago-area mosques, said Ahmed Rehab, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago office.

"And what we were saying is that we need to react in a way that does the Prophet justice, not more injustice," he said.

CAIR has spoken out against the violent reaction of some Muslims.

You think the Chicago Tribune is making it up?

You are living proof that propaganda works. The information is right in front of you, but you question it...what, until it's on CNN? Of course this nutjob gets press, and of course the peaceful, reasonable people get none at all.

There are probably close to 1.5 billion Muslims on this planet. How many of them burned shit down? Don't let the media control the way you see the world. They helped manipulate America into supporting the Iraq war. You're going to be surprised when they do it again?

Seriously, Google is your friend.

30. Please.
I take nothing on faith.

Besides, no one was saying that every Muslim on the planet supports terrorism, or rioting. I want to see lots more.

Hey, just because we don't agree, that doesn't make you right. Ii suspect I read a far larger variety of news sources than you do, as I make a determined effort to get all sides.

32. hee hee, what about the leadership in saudi arabia? ;)
y'know this is working wonders for them, right? they do a lot of things differently, and when it came to western technology their actions often seemed stupid or ridiculous to me. but make no mistake, these people are geniuses when it comes to assessing human nature, manipulation, and cutthroat diplomacy. give them a good long while, especially after much international courting, to submit a brilliantly crafted rebuke/condolence statement -- saying absolutely nothing you want. they get what they want without having to lift a finger -- just a few well placed words and playing both sides for the middle.

you're welcome to expect some leadership and forthright dealing from saudi arabia, but please, please, i implore you not to hold your breath...
;)

5. If Allah is insulted...
...let Allah do the punishing. I get so pissed off at gods who are so weak they must have man do their dirty work.

Actually, I'm pissed at men who use a god as an excuse to engage in violence to satisfy their miserable, self-loathing.

7. If anyone's read Jon Ronson's "Them: Adventures with Extremists"
this arsehole is the guy from the opening chapter. Why the BBC (and Channel 4 News tonight) are giving him air time is beyond me - of course he's going to say insane things, he's a nutjob fundamentalist. This is a time for the great many moderate muslim organisations, leaders and individuals to be heard, but they don't generate such catchy headlines.

Because the government were about to arrest him for something? If so, why are the British media bothering to contact him? He's one person that the less we hear from, the better.

12. i am not kicking this
It is sadly not a kiss,
from a southern muslim friend,
perhaps he should do his bend,
hoping that his death threats mend,
deference god in every end.
might that allah kicks his ass,
when he bends there being so crass,
fatwa for his ego's end,
long time further should he bend.

13. Aren't the British deporting clerics for hate speech or incitement?
Some on the left say that concern about Muslim immigration in Europe is a form of racism, but many in England and other European countries are very worried about a growing minority group perceived to be actively hostile to the cultural values (secularism and free expression in particular) of the host societies. I understand that certain countries are taking steps to deport preachers of hate, and limit immigration.

(he's not a British citizen) but for who knows what reason, the BBC phoned him in Lebanon for his opinion. Stupid move.

Maybe the BBC was acting on a request from their US neocon friends ~

As I recall, when things were getting wild in N.Ireland, just to keep the fires of hatred burning, someone always asked that other fundie nutcase, the Rev. Ian (I-don't-hate-Chyatolics,-Katie,-I-just wish-they-were-all-dead) Paisley for his opinion, also.

23. Since Ian Paisley leads a major political party in Northern Ireland
his opinion has been sadly relevant to what many Unionists have been thinking for 35 years or more (he's been an MP since 1970). Omar Bakri Mohammed, on the other hand, has a realtively small following.

28. Very true, which makes you wonder all the more why the BBC asked
for his opinion ~ particularly since there is a Muslim member of Parliament whose opinion is far more worthy of attention, one would think. By contrast, he asked the question 'why were there no arrests on Friday?'

22. Iran's parliament issued a warning for publishers of the cartoons.
Also Monday, 200 members of Iran's parliament issued a statement warning that those who published the cartoons should remember the case of Salman Rushdie — the British author against whom the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a death warrant for his novel "The Satanic Verses."
