Pakistanis Stopped From Protesting U.S.
Anger Grows in Wake of Deadly U.S. Airstrike
By RIAZ KHAN, AP

UKKA GHUND, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistani security forces on Monday stopped hundreds of hard-line Islamists from heading to northwestern Pakistan to protest against a fatal U.S. missile attack, the first time authorities have tried to quell mounting anti-American sentiments.

The convoy of 2,000 protesters, led by senior politicians from an opposition religious coalition, was heading to Damadola to protest the Jan. 13 attack that targeted top al-Qaida leaders but also killed 13 civilians -- outraging many in this Islamic nation.

Hundreds of armed local police erected barricades at Yukka Ghund, a town about 20 miles from Damadola, and blocked the convoy -- which had set off earlier from the capital Islamabad, gathering strength along the way.

There was no violence but some protesters chanted "Down with America! Down with Musharraf!" After some of the political leaders made speeches, the convoy headed back.

They just need a few more slogans and invite-only town halls.

Convoy of Islamists heading to US airstrike site stopped
- By Riaz Khan

Yukka Ghund (Pakistan) Jan. 23: Pakistani authorities stopped 2,000 strong convoy of hardline Islamists heading for the scene of a US missile attack, an official said on Monday.

They were heading to Damadola to protest the airstrike that killed 13 people there in a failed attempt to target Al Qaeda’s No. 2 man. Hundreds of armed tribal policemen erected barricades and told the protesters to return.

"We have instructions from the government that these political leaders should not be allowed to go to Bajur," said Mr Mohammed Jamil, the region’s top government official.

5. Musharraf has alot to worry about
If he is seen as appeasing *, then there is a good chance that he may get overthrown by Islamic fundamentalists. If that happens then nukes will fall into unwelcome hands. This is a much bigger threat than Iran.
