It is police 'discretion' to keep/use data for crime fighting. But in this case "the local chief constable agreed to remove his details" after a protest. Date can/IS kept even if suspect is acquitted.

Extent of DNA database revealed

DNA profiles of 24,000 juveniles who have never been cautioned, charged or convicted of an offense are stored on the UK database, an MP has revealed.

Grant Shapps, who represents Welwyn Hatfield , is to launch a campaign to get the details erased from records.

The Conservative MP fears a huge juvenile database - though not illegal - is being created by "stealth".

I believe this figure only relates to DNA obtained from criminals.

The Real DNA database is exponentially larger.

Whenever a patient visits the doctor and has blood drawn, have you ever noticed they take 3 vials, well only 2 are for the lab, The third goes on file with the health department. In addition, since the early 70's they save a vial from all newborns.

So the potential database is many times larger than anything they're announcing with these sub databases.
