USA threats after boycott support (Condi Threatens Norway)
Looks like Norway has its own Pat Robertson.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice threatened Norway with "serious political consequences" after Finance Minister and Socialist Left Party leader Kristin Halvorsen admitted to supporting a boycott of Israeli goods.

The reaction was reportedly given to the Norwegian embassy in Washington DC, and it was made clear that the statements came from the top level of the US State Department, newspaper VG reports.

VG claims that two classified reports promised a "tougher climate" between the USA and Norway if Halvorsen's remarks represented the foreign policy of the new red-green alliance of the Labor, Socialist Left and Center parties.

9. Interesting article from same site.
Goliat richer than believed

The Goliat field in the Norwegian sector of the Barents Sea holds up to 250 million barrels of oil equivalent, an increase from a previous estimate of 50 million boe, Norway's Petroleum Directorate said on Friday.

The upgrade comes after months of speculation on the size of the block - 65 percent owned by Italy's ENI SpA, 20 percent by Norway's Statoil and 15 percent by DNO - and after Statoil and Norsk Hydro drilled two dry wells in the Barents Sea in 2005.

"They haven't found hydro-carbons in this sort of geological structure before," Eldbjørg Vaage, the Directorate's spokeswoman, said. "This is good news for the Barents Sea as it's a high risk place to drill."

ENI completed drilling an appraisal well this year, Vaage said, and around a quarter of the reserves are gas and the rest is oil. An earlier estimate had been based on two wells drilled in 2000.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate estimates that the Barents Sea holds around 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent, about a third of the undiscovered oil and gas on the Norwegian continental shelf.

20. You're right, of course.
The problem with a bully is that they are usually outnumbered. There are usually far more smaller guys that get intimiated by the Thug.

The victims, in fact, are WAY more numerous than the "Paper Tiger" which is us, of course.

All that needs to happen is for the smaller guys to band together and PRESTO no more bully.

Besides, threats are of very limited use. If you overdo it, you're toast.

14. Geez, what part of inappropriate interference of the internal
affairs of a sovereign country don't the bush cabal understand? I know, I know, they don't understand squat and even if they did, they don't give a 'crapt' about appropriate diplomatic behavior anyway.

15. Norway: Parliament shuns Israeli products (12/22/05)
A regional parliament has ruled to boycott Israeli products in protest of 'Israel's oppression of Palestinians'; ADL condemns ruling, says 'decision only serves to exacerbate tensions and ill-will'

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3188789,00.html

<snip>

"The Norwegian parliament in the Sor-Trondelag region ruled Saturday to boycott products made in Israel and to forbid the sale and purchase of Israeli goods.

It is estimated that the decision, determined by a parliamentary vote, was made due to Norway's stance that Israel oppresses the Palestinians.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) strongly condemned the ruling Wednesday, saying that "this decision does nothing to promote Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation, but only serves to exacerbate tensions and ill-will."

19. I agree with Foxman
Why would Norway call for this boycott just as Israel has recently increased its peace efforts by departing the Gaza Strip? Makes no sense.

I figure I have already saved myself some 7,000+ euros and am planning on spending it by publishing a small brochure that highlights the details of my strategy...Boycott BushAmerica!!!Make it hurt!

22. the Bush regime *consistently* puts Israel's interests ahead of our own
Conservatives do a lot of flag-waving, but they're the worst traitors around. Just ask Larry Franklin.

Israel spies on us (and has done so for years), corrupts our officials, soaks up our tax money, sells our sensitive technology to China, and even attacked one of our ships in international waters -- and when Norwegians decide that they don't want Israeli goods, we start threatening Norway?

:eyes:

That's just insane. It defies explanation.

Unbelievable. Bush thinks he's running the world, and Condi is showing who she's working for and it ain't us. I do believe she's going to be the next president.

24. Last year, (FYI)
Norway produced 3,310,000 barrels of oil (2nd only to UK in northern oil production). First we boycott, then we sanction, then we invade. Ok, I confess, I'll be more than happy to sign up to invade and then once there, defect. Just can't resist those hot dishes dontchano, yessiree.

26. There's a lot of scandinavians in this country who...
I'm sure, would rather side with Norway than the US over this issue. Norway has the highest standard of living on the planet. Why in the fuck would they care what that sleezy bitch had to say? In fact, I'm surpised they even let her in their country. The more these countries object to US policies, the more desirable they are as an alternative to living here. My grandparents immigrated to the USA from Norway. Now their grandkids are thinking about immigrating back.
