Peru recalls ambassdor to Venezuela
Peru recalls ambassdor to Venezuela

www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-05 19:45:35

LIMA, Jan. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The Peruvian government announced on Wednesday that it will recall its ambassador to Venezuela, in response to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's public support to Peruvian leftist presidential candidate Ollanta Humala.

Hugo Chavez's public support for Ollanta Humala is seen as the intervention in the internal affairs of Peru, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

The Peruvian government will make efforts to ensure the success of the presidential election, to be held in April, and will not allow any intervention in the poll, the ministry added.

President Chavez met with Humala and Bolivian President-elect Evo Morales on Tuesday in Caracas, Venezuela.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chavez's preference for the leftist candidate doesn't begin to approach the level of meddling pursued by the Bush administration, as Bush had both Condoleeza Rice and Donald Rumsfeld threaten Bolivia with withholding of aid should Evo Morales be elected in the coming election.
No comparison.
24. Some stance on democracy, heh? Democracy for the west and its
supporters means only one thing: vote for our candidate or we will label you a renegade government and try to overthrow you.
5. Article on the candidate:
Ollanta Humala Gains Momentum
By Fabiola Bazo and Maxwell A. Cameron
November 15, 2005
In a trend that is alarming pundits, the presidential candidacy of Ollanta Humala appears to be gathering momentum. A couple of recent polls suggest that Humala has the potential to capture disaffected voters who might otherwise be inclined to support Fujimori.
According to Apoyo Opinion y Mercado, Humala has risen by three percentage points in the last month, and is now favored by 11 percent of the electorate. In the southern highlands his support reaches 23 percent and 19 percent in the central sierra.(1)
In the 1980s Peru had a strong (if not very unified) democratic left, which routinely won substantial representation in congress and municipalities throughout the nation. In the 1990s, with the rise of Fujimori, political parties of all stripes lost their claim on the allegiance of voters who, in unprecedented numbers, threw their support behind so-called “independent” candidates. Today, most voters still see themselves as independent and overwhelmingly reject party attachments. A robust majority of 60 percent locate themselves in the center of the political spectrum, according to Apoyo.(2)
That said, if you combine the 18 percent of the voters who define themselves as “center left” with the rest of the left, you get almost 40 percent of the electorate—or at least that is what the APOYO numbers suggest. In the 1980s, these voters tended to support the left or APRA and in the 1990s they were captured by Fujimori. They are among the voters who are now turning to Humala.
This should be interesting. He's so new, Bush's people haven't even thought up any potent charges to fling at him, considering most Americans have never heard of him. It's going to take them a lot of hard work to stir up seething hatred for a total stranger again!
Peru revolt leader to fight polls
Ollanta Humala has promised to cut the presidential salary
A former army officer who led a brief revolt against Peru's government in 2000 has officially registered to run in presidential elections next year.
Recent opinion polls have shown growing support for Ollanta Humala, who has argued for a nationalist energy policy.
Mr Humala was forced into exile and retirement after a revolt against former President Alberto Fujimori.
Correspondents say he is similar to leftist Venezuelan head Hugo Chavez, who also led a failed military coup.
Mr Humala has said he is outraged at the way some of Peru's traditional parties are exploiting a current debate over pardoning military officers blamed for human rights abuses in the fight against Shining Path guerrillas in the 1980s and 1990s.
17. You're not taking the time to tell DU what you've got against Hugo Chavez.
You're here pointing at DU'ers and calling people "Chavez lovers." Of course that's your way of trying to red-bait, as right-wingers see leftists as being "commies."
Red-baiting is simply wrong here. Labelling DU'ers as Chavez-lovers is stupid, and it's an attack on DU'ers, rather than an attempt at dialogue.
What are your problems with his policies? Spit it out, and discuss it, or go drop your insults somewhere else.
Personal attacks are not appropriate.
12. Here's a fair and balanced headline on Ollanta Humala from Reuters
Peru nationalist tops president poll, stocks fall
snip
Humala's rise has frightened investors and the Lima General Stock Index fell 2.71 percent to 4,735.97 points because of the poll, two traders at Lima-based brokerages told Reuters. Peru's stock market notched up its biggest one-day loss since 2000 on Dec. 19, over fears that Humala could take power on July 28, 2006.
14. Looks as if they intend to get ahead of any chance of popularity
he could develope in the U.S., and start preparing the way for support for U.S. meddling in his future.
This is a new approach, trying to claim he would be disastrous for Peru's financial future.
According to the article, Humala has some new plans, anyway, and doesn't intend to follow the pattern set by the death-squad employer, Fujimori.
Here in the US, when a bunch of layoffs are announced, there are headlines that say :
"XYZ Corp announces layoffs of 15K..stocks close higher".. Get it?
It sounds like SA has finally found its footing and is about to shed the flearidden coat we have made them wear for decades.. They CAN make it without us, and it looks like they are going to make a try at it :)
25. Thats the point they didn't, Hugo just basically said 'I like the leftist'
as that would be expected considering teh Bolivarian revolution sweeping SA.
Perus current leaders aren't fond of that, so they claim he meddled when all he did was support.
Also there has been plenty of interference by the US down there for the last 100 years of a much more violent and destructive nature.
