How they got caught: After lobbyist broke off engagement, ex-fiancee told
From Rawstory.com -- seems Scanlon's jilted fiancee started the ball rolling. Never underestimate a woman scorned.

How they got caught: After lobbyist broke off engagement, ex-fiancee told of illicit dealings to FBI
Jason Leopold

<snip>
Scanlon was implicated in the Abramoff scandal by his former thirtysomething fiancee, Emily J. Miller, whom he met in the late 1990s while working as communications director for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), three former associates who worked with Scanlon at DeLay’s office said. Colleagues say Miller went to the FBI after Scanlon broke off their engagement and announced his intention to marry another woman.

Miller did not return a call seeking comment. Scanlon’s attorney, Stephen Braga, did not respond to phone calls or emails seeking comment. Former coworkers of Scanlon and Miller at DeLay’s office and of Miller at the State Department would speak only under condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to be called as witnesses in a trial.

Miller was DeLay’s young press secretary and as communications director, Scanlon was her boss. The two began a secretive office romance and Scanlon eventually proposed marriage, associates say.

In 2003, Miller left DeLay’s office to work at the State Department. Scanlon departed too, partnering with now-indicted conservative lobbyist Jack Abramoff in lobbying for an array of Indian tribes. As Scanlon’s star rose, troubles between the couple mushroomed.

In May 2004, Miller found herself at the center of attention when—while live on air—she ordered a cameraman for NBC’s Meet the Press to stop filming Colin Powell. A copy of the transcript shows Miller, who also used to work as an NBC staffer, as a brusque press aide. Powell eventually ordered that the interview continue and asked Miller to step aside.

What many people didn’t realize at the time, however, is that during the Powell interview Miller was upset because her fiancee, Michael Scanlon, had broken off their engagement, two of Miller’s former State Department co-workers said. While still engaged to Miller, Scanlon had started an affair with a manicurist and broke up with Miller because he planned to marry the other woman, three of Scanlon’s former associates at DeLay’s office said. They added that the two had numerous public arguments.

But Miller had something on Scanlon. He confided in her all of his dealings with Abramoff, former colleagues said. She saw his emails and knew the intimate details of his lobbying work—work which is now the center of a criminal fraud investigation. After the breakup, Miller went to the FBI and told them everything about Scanlon’s dealings with Abramoff, her coworkers added.

1. Remember "Emily, get out of the Way!" Colin Powell on MTP.
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 03:12 PM by Pirate Smile
It is that Emily.

edit to add:

"Powell scolds aide after interview interrupted
‘I don’t think that’s appropriate,’ host Tim Russert says

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell chastised a press aide for trying to cut short the taping of a television interview Sunday.

Powell, speaking from a Dead Sea resort in Jordan, was listening to a final question from moderator Tim Russert, who was in the Washington studio of NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

-snip-
NBC identified the aide as Emily Miller, a deputy press secretary.

-snip-
With the cameras still on the water, Powell snapped, "Emily get out of the way." He then instructed the crew to “bring the camera back,” and told Russert to go ahead with the last question.

30. Russert: "attempted news management gone berserk" - re: Emily
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A34743-2004May17.html

excerpt:

After NBC's Jordanian cameraman proceeded to film palm trees instead of Powell, Russert called it "attempted news management gone berserk." He said nothing like it had ever happened in his 13 years as the show's host.

In just six months on the job, Miller, 33, who controls access to Powell, seems to have made more enemies than usual among the reporters who cover the State Department. "Her manner is brusque, abrasive, demeaning," said one, asking to remain anonymous so as not to be frozen out of interviews with Powell. "She's not doing the secretary a service; she's doing him a disservice."

Miller responded: "This is much ado about nothing and overshadows the successful meetings on Mideast peace that the secretary was having. My job was to keep the trains moving so that five interviews could get done."

About six weeks ago, Boucher investigated reporters' complaints about Miller's conduct during a pool-camera shoot. "There were one or two places where she was too aggressive," he acknowledged. "We all make mistakes sometimes."

Do I watch the 2-hour CSPAN special on Abramoff or watch KO and then switch channels. Unfortunately, our VCR is hooked up to the TV I watch KO on, so taping on one set and watching on another isn't an option.

Oh, what to do, what to do....

with my KOEB buds while he's on. If I knew when the CSPAN special would repeat I could tape it, but I won't know when it will be on again. I'll probably watch the first half hour or so of KO -- the important part of the show -- and then switch over to CSPAN when he switches to fluff.

7. Finally the SEX!!
Is the ex-fiance/jilted woman beautiful? Any tawdry details about cigars in unlikely places? Any salacious tidbits about felatio? Any falafels?

Maybe, just maybe this will be the tipping point that will require the news to start their saturation coverage.

Although much more damaging to our country than anything President Clinton did, the Bush/Repuke scandals have lacked that voyeuristic quality that a good sex scandal brings to the table.

Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 04:50 PM by rocknation
Miller was DeLay’s young press secretary...Scanlon was her boss...In 2003, Miller left DeLay’s office to work at the State Department...Miller...also used to work as an NBC staffer...While still engaged to Miller, Scanlon had started an affair with a manicurist...

Nothing against manicurists, but that's not exactly "marrying up." If Miller is the kind of woman who thought she was loved for her professional accomplishments, being thrown over for someone so blatantly "inferior" would be more than enough send her into Lorena Bobbitt mode! I'm willing to bet that if Miller's replacement had OWNED a manicure salon, she wouldn't have taken it so hard.

I wish to make a categorical and public denial that the manicurist former DeLay aide Michael Scanlon had an affair with (while engaged to another woman) does not work at this beauty shop. Our manicurists are inspected by the Texas Department of Health and we're certain that something like that would have shown-up on a blood test.

As our friend Deb points out -- no story is complete without a woman scorned.

and she only ratted out Scanlon because he dumped her. Apparently , she wasn't outraged by his corruption when they were still together.

53. i should post this at DU groups astrology, but very in sync again...
the actions of a solitary woman. repeatedly this symbolism comes again and again in tarot readings. the markers are unmistakable, sheehan, plame, edmonds, etc.... from all sides it is the single woman factor that is bringing forth great upheavals.

even the negative kinds of individual women seem to be working, in the end, for the destruction of evil's plans. judith miller did great harm to this nation, and wanted to get away with it. yet in the end, to thinking people, she helped nail the coffin shut on NYT respectability (which is good. kill the propaganda, kill the mind control). in this case an apparently evil woman helped bring another house of cards to collapse. i'm now going to watch condi rice with amusement for the ending moment when her vessel becomes an instrument of the greater good, against all her previous actions and wishes. the betrayal will be beautiful. a great aspect of universe is playing some interesting cards lately, big actors are involved... most entertaining.

54. I Think That Would Be Impossible
Condi is constitutionally incapable of doing good, even by accident. And it is unlikely that she would go postal and save us all the cost of several large show trials. Besides, I want to see them all suffer in jail for life.

60. who ever said you can exert your free-will all the time, everytime?
and who ever said all your actions lead to your desired consequences?
;)
i don't think she's gonna get much of a choice on this one, the way the universe seems to be playing out. which is going to make the meltdown that much more entertaining for me...

57. I've been thinking the same thing for quite a while, albeit without the
added benefit of Tarot symbolism...whistleblowers from Enron to the FBI, Sybil and Valerie, as well as Cindy.

Then there's Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi...

The piece I missed was the "negative" female behavior...Miller and Miller, as well as Condi and Karen Hughes.

And, even a weather phenomenon with a female name, Katrina that was horrible and, yet, exposed once and for all, the emperor without his clothes. MKJ

67. More good examples of 'Family Values'
let the repukes choke on this for a while. Nothing like a sex scandle to get them going...unless
of course it's one of their own :)
