Gov. Bush: Educators, Not Politicians, Should Craft Science Curriculum

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- As the state begins to update it's science standards for students, Gov. Jeb Bush said Friday that educators -- not politicians -- should decide how they're crafted and whether "intelligent design" should be a part of it.

Despite his own personal belief that God created earth and all life on it, the Roman Catholic governor said he will leave science curriculum to education experts.

"The standards should be created by educators, not politicians," Bush said. "It's not my job."

Bush added that evolution should "absolutely" be part of science teachings, but he said there are gaps in the theory and he personally would want science teachers to allow discussions about creationism.

1. What a cretin. I hate the way he pretends to support science
and then throws a bone to the Christo-Facists.

2. Well, speaking personally George, Up Yours!
If George Bush couldn't be bothered to perform at more than a C- minus level at two of the most prestigious universities in the world on Daddy's dime--screw him and the horse he rode in on.

schools are all privately run?" I mean - who will "educators be" at that point?

All about getting rid of regulations. They'll have to schedule gym class really, really carefully since the rifle range will anew.

5. This is the logical jump I hate:
Bush added that evolution should "absolutely" be part of science teachings, but he said there are gaps in the theory and he personally would want science teachers to allow discussions about creationism

Yes, there are gaps in the theory of evolution, but where appropriate, science teachers should talk about how there are gaps in the theory of evolution, not how an unrelated idea is tied into it. When evolutionary theory was first promoted, it was full of countless gaps. As science has progressed, we've filled those gaps with verifiable information. Unknown parts of scientific theory are the driving force behind furthering scientific theory.

"Unknown parts of scientific theory are the driving force behind furthering scientific theory."

Further scientific inquiry is not needed if you already know everything like the Fundamentalists do!

9. The courts have ruled on numerous occasions that "creationism"
CANNOT be taught in the science curriculum. It is the established precedent since the late-1960's. That's the whole purpose of relabelling creationism "intelligent design." In fact, the Dover ruling was clear on this: intelligent design - as proposed by the Dover school board - was nothing other than creationism relabelled, and that is the precise legal reason why it had to be removed from the curriculum, even as a disclaimer. So, Governor Bush is here flouting 40 years of established legal precedent, and promoting the teaching of religion as science in the public schools of his state. This is an outrageous statement. Personally? Bush personally thinks that students should be indoctrinated in Christian dogmatics in their fucking science classes? What the fuck kind of thing is that to say for a governor of a diverse state? Unbelievable arrogance from these fuckwads.

10. Uh-huh...and then he adds the crap about creationism....
this governor should have been impeached long ago. He wants discussion about creation? Include space aliens and flying spaghetti monsters, and give them equal time with the wingnut churches...and then pass a law requiring churches to teach evolution.

Separation of church and state goes both ways. You dilute the public side and the private teachings of churches can come under scrutiny as well.

14. Yeah, he supports science but, ...
personally, he would like to see science teachers break the law and push religion in science class. Well, the Bush Brothers aren't very big on defending the Constitution or feeling bound by the rule of law, so we shouldn't be surprised.
