At GI's funeral, church to picket America's 'sins'

FREMONT — Members of the anti-gay church from Topeka, Kan., who protested outside a play at Newark Memorial High School in 2002 say they plan to return to picket the funeral of Sgt. Cheyenne Willey, 36, a Fremont soldier killed Friday in Iraq.

The Westboro Baptist Church, led by Pastor Fred Phelps, has picketed at nearly 80 funerals of U.S. troops killed in Iraq since June, holding bright neon signs attacking homosexuals and the United States, regardless of the sexual orientation of the deceased.

A church member and daughter of the pastor, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said church members planto picket the funeral for Willey as well as the funeral of Sgt. Regina Reali, 25, of Fresno.

The church raises its ire outside funerals of U.S. troops because members believe the soldiers' deaths are a direct result of God's anger at America's sins, including the existence of homosexuality, adultery, theft and commercialism.

Violence is exactly what he's hoping for. Not even the picketing of soldiers' funerals can bring him the attention he craves. He wants to goad the families--or anyone else--into fisticuffs or worse. Martyrs are good for even the most insane of causes, and they don't talk about invonvenient subjects such as child abuse.

I'm a real sicko and I can nonchalantly look at pictures of dead bodies on Rotten.com. But I couldn't keep reading that Phelps article cause of the pure hatred in it. I choked and linked off just about where I got to where he'd chopped his wife's hair off for her being insufficiently obedient to him. That man is just breeding future hate. I thank God for the miracle that his sons are able to see thru their dad's sickness and be able to tell their truth to the world.
