Kyiv, Ukraine — The last Ukrainian troops serving in Iraq have left the country, the Defence Ministry announced in a statement Tuesday, fulfilling a long-planned withdrawal pledged by President Viktor Yushchenko.
A column of eight armoured personnel carriers and 44 soldiers left the country and arrived in Kuwait.
“Not a single Ukrainian soldier remains on Iraqi soil,” the ministry statement said.
Ukraine initially opposed the invasion of Iraq but later contributed 1,650 troops to the U.S.-led coalition, becoming one of the largest non-NATO participants. Eighteen Ukrainian soldiers were killed and another 32 were wounded.
