John Diebold, a visionary thinker whose early and persistent promotion of computers and other far-reaching innovations helped shape industrial development in America and beyond, died yesterday at his home in Bedford Hills, N.Y. He was 79...

Mr. Diebold (pronounced DEE-bold) made a career of recognizing relevant advances in technology and explaining them to the likes of A.T. & T., Boeing, Xerox and I.B.M. Through books, speeches and his international consulting firm, Mr. Diebold persuaded major corporations to automate their assembly lines, store their records electronically and install interoffice computer networks...

In addition to the Diebold Group, he started John Diebold Inc., an investment firm, in 1967. It financed such ventures as a computer leasing company and a well-known manufacturer of polling machines.

After selling the Diebold Group in 1991 to Daimler-Benz, Mr. Diebold focused on the Diebold Institute for Public Policy Studies, a research group he founded in 1968 to promote broad, technology-based reforms.

1. Yeah, some legacy, crooked elections and cooked votes...
yes, it's pronounced DIE-bold...

It's the same man that brought us instant money from ATM's and instant elections for the repukes.

3. somehow, I don't think this is the same Diebold
If I remember correctly, the Diebold company that is responsible for electronic voting machines is the same company that made elevators and vaults. At least that is what I was told. And there seems to be no mention of that. Nor electronic voting, which would certainly be mentioned since it is a hot topc these days.

5. Thanks for the post! Never heard of him before. It's possible he didn't
intend for the Diebold voting machines to be controlled by the likes of Wally O'Dell (Bush/Cheney campaign chair in Ohio) with "TRADE SECRET," PROPRIETARY programming code and virtually no audit/recount controls. He wouldn't be the first inventor to inadvertently empower tyrants and robber barons (that phenomena goes back to Pythagoras--the underlying moral dilemma of all smart people vs. the dictators who would use their smarts for self-aggrandizement and oppression). But it's worth looking into. How far back does this plot against American democracy go? Who's behind it (besides Howard Ahmanson, the Urosevich brothers, Bilderberg Group players like Christopher Dodd and others we know something about), and just how was it hatched and played out?

9. In 1991 he sold the Diebold Group to Daimler-Benz. Aha!
George W. Bush, a member of the Order of Skull & Bones, was initiated in 1968. He has appointed over ten fellow members to work in his administration.

Evan Griffith Galbraith

Sec. Defense Rumsfeld’s rep. Europe & Defense advisor U.S. mission to NATO - ... member of the board, Groupe Lagardere S.A. Paris. ... The Groupe Lagardere S.A. controls, with Daimler Benz, EADS (European Aerospace and Defense Systems), Europe's largest defense contractor and principal owner of Airbus. US Ambassador to France under Reagan; Managing Dir 75-81, Dillon Read; Chmn 69-75, Bankers Trust International Ltd, London subsidiary Bankers Trust Co; 61-69 w/Morgan Guaranty Trust Co of NY; 61-69 w/Shearman & Sterling; Confidential Asst 60-61, Sec of Commerce; Member, Bar of NY, DC; Lt 53-57, USNR attached to the Central Intelligence Agency. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is stationed in Brussels.

Whether he is still in the administration, I do not know. But I'm reasonably sure my memory is correct that Daimler-Benz was a significant contributor to the bush campaign.

24. Umm, that's not QUITE right . . .
that's a photo of a Messerschmitt 109 -- D series, I think. It was manufactured by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (later designated Messerscmitt AG). Damiler Benz did not build the aircraft, though it supplied the power plant for all aircraft produced after the onset of hostilities with England.

27. It amazes me
to what extent people will go on with all sorts of crazy theories that have little basis in reality.

There is no evidence to show that this guy has anything to do with the present day Diebold corporation. I mean, this is like blaming Einstein for the creation of the atomic bomb. It makes little sense.

23. Not quite...
Diebold Group and John Diebold, Inc. (which were founded by John Diebold) vs Diebold, Incorporated - voting machine manufacturer (which was founded 67 years before John Diebold was born - by Charles Diebold).

Different founders, different - and as far as I can tell unrelated - companies.

30. Looks to me like
this is the source of the NYT quote (which I haven't seen elsewhere, except copied by CNET):

>>In 1967, he started John Diebold Inc., an investment firm that backed a number of ventures, including a computer leasing company and an enterprise that distributed software across Europe.<<

http://www.hbs.edu/entrepreneurship/newbusiness/2002spring_2.html

Looks pretty similar to me, except for the substitution of the second financed venture:

>>In addition to the Diebold Group, he started John Diebold Inc., an investment firm, in 1967. It financed such ventures as a computer leasing company and a well-known manufacturer of polling machines.<<

But - the NYT would never jump to conclusions, or just make stuff up to beat competitors to press ...http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/05/13/ny.times.investigation/

Seriously, I've looked and can't find any connection (other than the link placed in the CNET copy of the NYT article) between any of John Diebold's companies and the voting machine Diebold, which is a publicly traded company. I might be wrong, but I would think it would be unusual for a publicly traded company to be described as being financed by an investment firm that was not even founded until around 100 years after the 1800s inception of the company it was supposedly financing.

maybe I'll ask em about it but probably not cuz I don't want them bugging me

course they didn't even say it was Diebold

when did Diebold even get into voting machines anyway?-

"Diebold Learns What Edison Knew: Voting Machine Sales Are Tough

Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Diebold Inc. got off to a fast start in the voting machine industry. After almost 150 years of making safes, bank vaults, jailhouse doors and, more recently, automated teller machines, Diebold bought Global Election Systems Inc. and its AccuVote line of computerized voting terminals in 2002..."

maybe he was into it before them with another company
