The explosive crash of a Chalk's seaplane over Miami Beach comes at a time when the small airline is struggling to maintain its presence in Miami after years of struggling to remain financially sound.

Billed as the oldest airline in the world, Chalk's Ocean Airways has flown for generations between Miami and Bimini and Nassau in the Bahamas.

Confalone (the owner) has tried in recent years to sell the airline. Last year, a $4.3 million deal to sell it fell through, records show.

Confalone also entertained a $10 million offer from former racing promoter Ralph Sanchez and former Miami Commissioner Arthur Teele Jr. -- the details of which became public after Teele was arrested on corruption charges last year. That deal also fell apart.
