'Super Size Me' filmmaker plans film on conservatives, science
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 02:57 AM by Halliburton
<snip>
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - "Super Size Me" filmmaker Morgan Spurlock plans a documentary on conservative US politicians' treatment of science, Hollywood press reported.

Spurlock has purchased the film rights to adapt a book, "The Republican War on Science," according to the entertainment industry newspaper Daily Variety.

The book by Chris Mooney argues that Republican stances on stem-cell research, global climate change and sex education, among other topics, show a conservative bias on environment, health and security issues.

"There was a time when science was respected by politicians and government officials and when the information obtained through unbiased scientific exploration was used for the better of society," Spurlock told Variety.

3. K & R...
Science deals with fact. Ideology deals with imagination.

I'm looking forward to a well done piece on how our RW ideological "leadership" wages war on fact.

5. Climate Change and The Mountain West
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 09:07 AM by VogonGlory
If Mr. Spurlock wants to hit a nerve regarding global warming, he might want to mention the effect that global warming would have on Rocky Mountain snow melt, which strongly affects the water supplies of all those western states that elect loot-and-plunder reactionary Republicans. If that water comes down rain instead of snow, a lot of Rocky Mountain states (And California, Nevada, and Idaho, too) would be facing severe water shortages.

This might not bother very wealthy developers, who could always go back East with only minimal hardship and most of their fortunes intact, but would hit millions of middle and even upper-middle class suburbanites who moved to the West and trusted those politicians to look after their interests.

It's not just blue-staters on the coasts that are going to be affected by global warming; those red-staters are also going to get it in the chops.

6. A lot of people don't realize how much of the world's food
comes from California's Central Valley. Any reduction in the Rocky Mountain snow pack will have a disastrous effect on the crops.

Hey, Red Staters, WE told you so!

11. the Rockies DO NOT water the central valley of CA
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 12:25 PM by AZDemDist6
the Sierra Nevadas do that

the rocky mtn's water shed is the Colorado River and the Great Basin/Salt Lake on the western side

It would affect Arizona, Utah and SoCal but not the Central Valley. the Imperial Valley would take it in the lips however

18. change in western snow fall will have great effect
on CA crop production. We rely on the snow melt not to hit the reservoirs all at once in the winter. If less water is locked up in snow, the dams will have to let more water out in the winter, hence will not have as much water reserved in the summer. Central Valley Project was predicated on weather patterns of the 1930s-1940s when the general weather was cooler. Without adjustments, climate change will cause havoc here, too.

21. no question, lived in the Central Valley for years and years
and wasn't arguing that climate change will effect CA crops, only that the ROCKY MOUNTAINS aren't the water source

24. Freeperism As A Geographical Expression
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 07:57 AM by VogonGlory
Whenever I post anywhere about the consequences of global warming--rising coast lines, vanishing snow packs, loss of tax base--I can't help but think about the hard-core right-wing nay-sayers and where they probably live.

Back when I using the Time Warner ISP, the loudest right-wing Green-bashers all seemed to be clustered well inland, East of the Missouri River and, like most of today's Bush-bots and Banana Republicans, situated in deepest, darkest Dixie. THEIR water supplies wouldn't be affected, THEY wouldn't have to move, THEIR way of life wouldn't be affected (Or so they think).

I wish I could say that Texas was in the forefront of looking after our water supply and for taking care of our prosperity. It breaks my heart to know that not only we aren't in the vanguard, but in fact most of the power in the Lone Star State is aligned AGAINST doing anything about climactic changes that threaten the water supplies of nearly half our state.

7. awesome

Science news doesn't get enough attention.

It wasn't always this way - I remember the seventies when children were exposed to a lot of
science programming and pro-science views. There's been a real backlash here since the nineties.

9. I loved his show "30 Days" on FX
In the pilot episode he and his girlfriend lived as workers making near minimum wage. I'm sure it pissed off a lot of right-wingers for violating their rosy view of the great Bush economy.

20. I didn't like the part of Supersize Me
where the guy (forget his name) shows the pictures to the kid and he guesses "George W. Bush" and the guy says "No, but close" and the picture turns out to be of Jesus.

It just shows how kids in America have already been brainwashed into thinking that Bush=God

26. All right Morgan!
Can't wait for this one. "Supersize Me" was great and his "30 Days" show on cable had some excellent pieces, particularly the one where he & his girlfriend lived on minimum wage jobs for 30 days. Just that episode alone should be required viewing for the bush-bots to see how "great" the economy is doing for anyone other than the corporatistas at the top of the ladder.

27. Good: more mockery of the right wing, please!
Taking these banal frat boys seriously has been nothing short of disastrous; high time to get the country laughing at them.

Remember, in a semi-literate and politically apathetic nation glued to TV, reason won't get you very far. Laughter, however...
