Lieberman In A Political Crossfire
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 03:49 PM by damkira
On a wintry Tuesday, the heat once again was on U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman over his support of President Bush and the war in Iraq.

Democracy for America, a political group founded by Howard Dean and now run by his brother, Jim Dean, delivered to Lieberman's Hartford office a critical letter signed online by 55,000 Americans, including 1,500 Connecticut residents.

Former U.S. Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr., a week after telling reporters he would consider challenging Lieberman if no other anti-war candidate emerged, spent the afternoon on WTIC-AM 1080 fielding calls about the war and his potential candidacy.

Tonight, opponents of Lieberman are being urged to register their feelings with the Democratic State Central Committee, even though the committee is not scheduled to discuss Lieberman or entertain public comments. Calling for the turnout are two online groups whose goals are evident in the names of their websites - dumpjoe.com and draftlowellweicker.com.

5. Was he your Senator?
I don't know a lot about Weicker, but I want holy joe removed from office just as much as I want all the other repub senators out.

It'd be better even to have someone like Lincoln Chafee than lieberman.

9. If Weicker declared himself a Democrat
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 04:14 PM by DefenseLawyer
and challenged Joementum in a primary, that would be great. But if he runs as an independent in the general election it would create a great risk of splitting the Democratic/progressive vote and electing the republican candidate. Even though Joe is a tool, I would rather have a tool than another republican in the Senate.

21. I don't think so
And here's why.

Because he is a Trojan.

...Horse.

Yes, he has a good voting record on many of the issues that matter to me, and I don't think the democratic party should be clones of each other like the pugs have been lately. But he has been way too accommodating of the neocons, and it goes all the way back to the Clinton administration. He was out in front on the impeachment issue - as if a bj was more important than unilateral war. And I feel that his kit glove approach to Darth Cheney in the VP "debate" of 2000 was really the last straw. He's like Bob Woodward; a liberal icon who is really in cahoots with the most destructive elements of American politics.

And then there is his unquestioned loyalty to Israel. I don't think he should be a Republican; Likud is the party for him.

14. Is there any chance of knocking Lieberpuke out in the primary?
So the Democrats could field a Democratic candidate for the office for a change? Or is Lieberman too entrenched to be dislodged in the primary and will have to cost us an election or two before he gives up and goes home in disgrace?

19. That is my fear as well
That is how John Rowland got elected governor 11 years back - Weicker's Lt. Governor got crushed, but she took away enough votes from Bill Curry to prevent him from winning. I can see it now - Nancy Johnson gets 35% of the vote, with Lieberman & Weicker splitting the remaining 65%.

26. Oh yawn...
Another day, another round of my reading anti-Democrat hate on the D.U.

Look people, hate to burst a bubble that's even bigger than the President's, but Joe ain't goin' nowhere.
With a 70% approval rating in his state somebody thinks he's doing a good job. Civility usually wins praises.

Ooooooo. But we got not just one, but two anti-Lieberman websites! Ooooooo! :silly:
