Democrats seek energy independence by 2020

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democrats launched a plan on Monday for energy independence by 2020 that seeks to relieve historically high oil and gas prices by cutting reliance on foreign sources of energy.

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid Pennsylvania's Gov. Ed Rendell said greater use of renewable energy, mass transit and domestic fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel could cut oil and gas imports. A plan they unveiled on Monday is called Energy Independence 2020.

President George W. Bush is seeking more domestic production of oil by pushing Congress to include opening Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling in a bill that could see a vote this week. He also supports heavy investment in hydrogen energy.

Some energy analysts say the United States, which consumes about a quarter of the 80 million barrels of oil the world uses daily, will be dependent on imports for many decades into the future because alternatives only provide a percentage point or two of the country's energy.

1. Better Get Some Policy Independence First
If we really want to develop a party, then we need the party equivalent of aerobics: discipline, a plan, a solid financial basis, and a marketable set of principle: what the Democratic Party stands for, and what it won't stand for! Then after winning a few elections, a national policy could evolve.

had not been abolished by Reagan, the US would have achieved complete energy independence by 1991.

5. A little late for that...
I agree with Kunstler- neither one of the two major parties is going to survive the fallout from peak oil.

6. Wait!!! This is a GREAT issue and we really need to do this!
Yea, yea. I know the Dems been lost with no message and rancid performance the last few years - but this is something that we could run with - and it's something we SHOULD run with. It's a clear difference from the GOP and it's a winning issue. Think about it.

7. The Dems must hammer the GOP hard with this.
Get all of the candidates on the same page. And have them collectively rag on the Republicans until they're bloody and beaten to a pulp. The Republicans must be branded as the party of dinosaur fossil fuel, climbing gas prices and profiteering.

The Democratic Party must become synonymous with energy independence and relief for the people.
