Strong Quake Hits Afghan-Pakistani BorderStrong Earthquake Strikes Afghan-Pakistani Border Region; No Immediate Reports of Damage

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan Dec 12, 2005 — A strong earthquake jolted northwestern Pakistan early Tuesday, the scene of a devastating quake two months ago. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was a magnitude 6.7 and was centered in the Hindu Kush region of northeastern Afghanistan.

Salim Khan, an official at the Peshawar earthquake center, estimated the quake "must be" about magnitude 6.5. It struck shortly before 3 a.m. local time.

A magnitude-7.6 earthquake on Oct. 8 killed at least 87,000 people in northwestern Pakistan and Indian Kashmir.

8. Could these quakes possibly still be aftershocks from last

December's quake that caused the tsunami? It seems as though ever since that time, there have been a lot of fairly large magnitude quakes in the area.
