Uncounted deaths: Katrina tally doesn't include all victims

<snip>

Even as the official toll continues to rise when more bodies are found in once-flooded homes, the real total may never be known.

The victims are scattered far and wide, and the connections of their deaths to the storm are not necessarily obvious.

States also have different definitions for storm-related deaths. For example, Louisiana counts evacuee deaths from heart attacks or strokes before October first as storm deaths, but Georgia doesn't.

1. I wasn't aware that Georgia had any coastline on the Gulf of Mexico....
...what the heck is the point in bringing Georgia into the discussion when it's obvious that Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama took the brunt of the impact??

3. Didn't many flee to Georgia?
It's obvious why the federal government wants to keep the total as low as possible. After 9/11 Dubya doesn't need to have any more records set when it comes to fatalities.

9. Another way of not counting deaths is if the person went to another state
Get injured in Katrina, go to another state and die from the Katrina induced injuries means you may not be counted. All Katrina related deaths in all states should be counted. Why, that would be like saying someone didn't die because of the Iraq war if they were medivaced to Germany and died of wounds there.

2. What the heck?
How about Minneosota?

Georgia's coastline is on the Atlantic.

4. So if you died as a result of neglicence on the part of the government,
it doesn't count? That's pretty frickin' convenient. We should be seeing "wrongful death" suits, at least civil if not criminal.

5. It will look bad if there's more than 3,000 deaths there...
Then people will finally realize it's worse by far than 9/11 ever was, and give us some much needed perspective on how to rate disasters like this in comparison. Then maybe we'd put our money where it'd do the most good, for reconstruction rather than war.
It appears to be government policy to keep the numbers down, can't be making the proletariat aroused, now can we?

7. This is something those of us close to ground zero...

have been complaining about. It is even hard to get accurate numbers of the missing (and presumed dead). The last good number I heard were over 6,600. I think this administration purposly obscures the numbers to avoid further fallout. They have done this in Iraq because it is easier to do. I think they need to be nailed on this one.

8. Death toll from Andrew
Keep in mind that this is an attribute also shared with Hurricane Andrew. It also bears mentioning that the Andrew relief was cooridinated by Andrew Card, and I'm sure you guys know who that is..

:eyes:

The southern areas of Miami were DEVASTATED. The vastly erroneous death-toll in Hurricane Andrew should have been a huge warning sign of things to come in terms of Government honesty. Do some online research on this, but keep a gag-bag handy.

Deja-Vu..

11. cheers
Thank you.

The welcome, however, is bittersweet considering my first post was deleted by a moderator and I'm having a real hard time understanding why..
